Description:
Moscow: Molodaya Gvardia, 1964. First Russian Book Edition. 351,[1] pp., with several in-text illustrations. Cloth-backed pictorial paper over boards. Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. Nevertheless, it was a major undertaking, engaging major Russian literary talents of the day, with the still-authoritative translation by Nora Gal (1912-1991) and Raisa Oblonskaya (1924-2010), an introduction by celebrated literary critic Raisa Orlova… Read More

[San Marino, California]: [Huntington Library], 1939. First Edition. Softcover. Near fine. [20] pp. Color gift-wrapping tissue over paper wrappers, side-stapled, letterpress label on front cover. 1939 Christmas Seal stamp below colophon. Small stains and light toning and wear in tissue, tiny stain at fore-edge of first three leaves, else near fine. Fourth issue of the annual Huntington Library Christmas party keepsake journal, which ran from 1936 to 1970. The running joke of the present issue was economic anixiety, with a dedication "to the proposition that just maybe perhaps it might possibly be better if this economy thing doesn't reach too far into the reading of proof" and the limitation statement, "This 'economy number' of the Quarterly was printed (sic) in 100 copies, from pie-eyed type" (the "sic" presumably refers to the mimeograph production of the booklet). Contents include a "Dead End Kids" take on the Three Bears, humorous poetry, jokes, and a crossword puzzle. Scarce, with OCLC… Read More

Description:
Boston: Wells and Lilly, 1823. 24 pp. Original plain green wrappers, stitched. Contemporary ink ownership signature of "G. Bond" on front wrapper. Wrappers lightly chipped at spine ends and corners, light soiling to front wrapper and extreme fore-edge, else near fine. An anti-Calvinist pamphlet from the Unitarian Controversy of 1805-1835, insisting upon "right of thought" and separation of church and state as fundamentally Christian principles. The author targets Massachusetts's "orthodox party" of Congregationalist clergy as heirs to Constantine and Rome in their abuses of Christianity and mental enslavement of their churches' laity. Sabin attributes the work to John Lowell, Jr. (1769-1840), the prominent Federalist Massachusetts lawyer, prolific pseudonymous pamphleteer, and author several years earlier of "Are You a Christian or a Calvinist?" Sabin 42457.
