Description:
New York: Harper & Bros, 1871. Despatches sent from Paris during the Franco-German War (by balloon!), the first report s of the Paris Commune. Labouchere (1831-1912) exposed the Piggot forgery against Charles Stuart Parnell and sat as an M.P. himself. Although a very popular book at the time, the "Diary" is quite scarce today. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition, preceding the Macmillan by a year. Marbeled paper-covered binding with a brown cloth spine (no lettering), that show very little wear. The text is clean, bright, and supple, still quite readable. 131 pages, and in the rear, the publisher has added some 12 pages of adverts for various series available. Of interest, although Labouchere's portrait is on the Title Page, his name is not. This is an ex-library copy, with the 19th-century stamps of two different libraries scattered throughout, and evidence of label removal on the FFEP. However, the stampings are not intrusive, and considering the scarcity of this… Read More

Description:
New York/London: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935. David Lamson wrote this story of prison life while on San Quentin's death row. His conviction for murdering his wife was overturned; a second trial was hung. "As this book goes to press arrangements for a third trial are in progress." That third trial also resulted in a hung jury. Did he do it? Quercus believes that the jury is still out. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition [Scribner's "A"].A popular book, it is surprisingly scarce today. Gray cloth binding titled in white on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 338 pages. Very fresh and bright. A bit of darkening around the edges; with a touch of rub to the tips (one frayed). Description:
New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, 1928. "Long Lance" was born Sylvester Clark Long (1890-1932) and worked as a journalist, actor, and advocate for Native American rights. During his life he claimed native ancestry through several different tribes, including the Cherokee and Blackfoot. Because his story changed often, he became to be considered a sort of fraud, but the real story may be more complicated than that judgement allowed. Whatever the truth, his biography here is a delightful read and was very popular. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Brick red cloth binding with titling in black on the spine and front cover; representation of two tipis on the front. Clean text; xv, 278 pages. Frontis illustration, with ten others within. The forward is by Irvin S. Cobb, a journalist advocate who seems to have become disillusioned later. Bumping to two corners, with a touch of rub to the head and foot of the spine. The rather attractive dustjacket is unclipped, lightly… Read More

New York: A.L. Burt Company Publishers The fourth title in the "Gray Phantom" series by Herman Lanson (1882-1960). Hubin, p. 245. Green cloth binding with two very creepy clutching hands in black on the front cover; titling in black on the spine. Clean text; viii, 303 pages, with a nine-page publisher advert in the rear. Lightly rubbed at the margins, and would be graded considerably higher if there were not several "dings" to the front cover, which have telegraphed through to the first endpaper.
