Description:
Women and Young Persons (Employment in Lead Processes). London: House of Commons, 1920. First Edition. 12.75" x 8" inches. This bill bars the employment of women and children from working in certain processes of lead manufacturing. It was presented by Sir John Baird and its provisions were outlined by the International Labour Organization of the recently established League of Nations. The effect of lead on fertility and the developing bodies of young people has been recognized as toxic since classical antiquity, but it took until 1920 for it to be codified in the UK. This is undoubtedly because lead was a hugely popular ingredient in many industrial processes, because of its malleability and use in constructing various metal alloys. Very good condition.

Description:
Set of 3 Acts by Parliament regulating factory labor conditions for women and children in the bleach, dye, and lace industries, 1860-62. First Edition. Three documents, totaling 12 pages. The three Acts enclosed from the UK Parliament are the Bleach and Dye Act (1860), Lace Factories Act (1861), and an 1862 extension of Bleach and Dye to include open-air bleaching facilities. These pieces of legislation were part of the Factory Acts, an series of acts passed by Parliament throughout the 19th and into the 20th century, to regulate the condition of industrial employment. This legislation was indicative of the class struggle in Britain at the time, in that its preeminent position as a manufacturing center and those industrial interests enriched by that unique position eventually had to accept some limits on the labor that they could extract from the population. An important set of documents that remind us that there were many stops on the road to the 8 hour work day. Very good condition.

Description:
[Labor Unions] [New York City] Archive of 6 silver gelatin photos illuminating the Anti-Taft-Hartley Act protests in New York City, circa 1947. Each photo measuring at 4.5" x 3". The Taft-Hartley Act is a 1947 United States federal law that extended and modified the 1935 Wagner Act. The act prohibits various union practices, requiring the disclosure of certain financial and political activities by unions. The restrictive nature of the bill is extensive, asserting that any form of picketing, sympathy strikes, and secondary boycotts are strictly prohibited. Additionally, the bill limited the freedoms of laborers by outlawing closed shops, giving workers the right to decline to join a union. Consequently, this allowed the President to investigate labor disputes or strikes that adversely affected the health and safety of others. Another provision required all union officers to take an oath and file an affidavit within the preceding twelve-month period stating that they were not members of the Communist… Read More

[Literature] [Philosophy] [Civil Rights] [African American]. The American Negro Writer and his Roots: Selected Papers from The First Conference of Negro Writers, March, 1959. New York: American Society of African Culture, 1960. First edition signed in original wrappers. Octavo. 70 pages. The selection of essays presented in this book are from the American Society of African Culture (AMSAC), an organization of mostly black writers and artists that was created as a result of the Congress of Black Writers and Artists. Includes essays by Langston Hughes, Saunders Redding, John Henrik Clarke, Julian Mayfield, William Branch, Arna Bontemps, John Oliver Killens, Sarah E. Wright, Samuel W. Allen, Arthur P. Davis, and Loften Mitchell. The Congress had a Pan-Africanist orientation, seeking to unite diasporic blacks and Africans on the basis of a common black identity. In the Francophone world, this intellectual project became known as negritude. Some of the essays within this book grapple with that concept,… Read More

Description:
Collection of 5 Vintage Optical Lantern images of Iran circa 1905. 3 1/4" x 4." The images include the Qajar Royal Palace, the royal gardens in Tehran, the Khaju Bridge in Isfahan, and Muslims at prayer in a Persian Mosque. In the first image we see a Persian man in traditional 19th century clothing strolling in the Qajar Royal Palace and gardens. The second image is a very rare aerial view of 19th century Tehran, labeled "the Shah's gardens and the new neighborhoods." Since this image predates airplanes it is an extremely rare find, probably using an aerial balloon. In the third image we see the Khaju Bridge, which is one of the most famous bridges in Isfahan, Iran. It was built by the Persian Safavid king, Shah Abbas II around 1650 C.E., on the foundations of an older bridge. It has 23 arches and is 105 meters long and 14 meters wide. The structure served as both a bridge, and a dam, and public meeting place as it links the Khaju quarter on the north bank with the Zoroastrian quarter across the… Read More

Collection of 2 Vintage Optical Lantern images of Iran circa 1905. 3 1/4" x 4." The first photo shows a few hundred people attending a funeral, with over twenty people standing in the trees. In the foreground musicians hold tubas and flutes. It is rare to find images of this era with musicians and their instruments. The men in the photo are wearing Qajar-era clothing including long tunics with astrakhan hats and most have beards. The second image shows a man being exposed to a public foot whipping as punishment for a crime. The accused is lying on his back with his feet tied up at an angle to a horizontal post. Men surround around him holding canes, including one extended out and resting on the accused's feet. The men are all dressed in traditional Qajar-era clothing including trousers, waistcoats, sardaris and astrakhan hats. These are positives on a glass lantern, Gelatin silver bromide. In 1850, William and Frederick Langenheim, invented a transparent positive image of a photograph in the form of a… Read More

Description:
Tintype showing Mexican woman's seated portrait. Circa 19th century. Measures 2.5" x 3.5". Image shows a seated Mexican woman wrapped in traditional Aztec patterned sarape blanket. Her expression is stoic and her gaze intense. Her hair is pulled back with a ringlet peaking from her left, a common hairstyle in the mid 1800s. Tintypes, original photographic images printed on thin sheets of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel, were invented in 1855 and popularized through the 1870s when they were replaced by new technology in albumen prints. This photo was taken within only a couple decades of Mexico receiving their independence. In 1811, women made up a third of the identified labor force and were oftentimes single and head of the household, even through their major contributions to Mexican society, they were still not recognized in the 1811 census. Photography was one of the few ways to recognize a woman's personhood at a time they were unfairly represented. Top corners of photo clipped. Overall… Read More

All are about 8" x 11". Three are silver gelatin photogaphs in black and white, four are in color. Le Samourai is a noir crime film about the intersecting paths of a professional hitman trying to find out who hired him for a job and then tried to have him killed, and the Parisian commissaire trying to catch him. It was a massive success in France, selling 1.9 million tickets, which led to an English dubbed version released in the US in 1972. With aesthetic emphasis placed on being "cool," the film is seen as a direct ancestor to films like No Country for Old Men, Road to Perdition and Pulp Fiction. Photos feature action sequences and close ups of stars Delon, Nathalie Delon and Francois Perier. Two have the US title as well as production information in lower white margin. Lee, Harper. To Kill A Mockingbird. Published by J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia & New York. , 1960. This is the First edition of the BOTM, and the stated "Seventh Printing" on price-clipped dust jacket. Like the original trade first edition first printing Quarter green cloth over brown cover boards. The book cover has a small black dot in the corner that tells us it is not the trade edition. Also with the same dust jacket front image as the first printing, but different D.J back cover. Measures 5.5" x 8.25", and has 296 pages. The book was published on July 11, 1960, but because Harper Lee had never published a book before, the publisher had estimated a small first printing run and had to do multiple printings within a few months. In the years since, it has sold more than 30 million copies. The story of a young girl Scout and her father Atticus Finch, a white lawyer who defends a Black man against a racist rape charge became an immediate bestseller and won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize.
