Albany, NY: THEPURE Baking Powder Company, 1904. Paperback. Orange printed wraps, Fair. 128 pgs, 14 x 19 cm. THEPURE Cook Book, compiled by the owner and principal of the Greater New York Cooking School, Gesine Lemcke, was obtained by customers of THEPURE Baking Powder, as the footnotes instruct, by sending in their name and address to the company with three two cent stamps enclosed. Inside are hundreds of recipes utilizing the cream of tartar based baking powder, alongside slanderous claims about their competing phosphate-based baking powders and endorsements of the products. THEPURE Baking Powers name is an interesting sign of the beginnings of brand marketing, in the way it confronts the claims of wholesomeness and purity from other brands on the market. Some tearing along spine, previously repaired with clear tape, signs of wear and use on covers. Back cover loose

London: Typis Gulielmi Bowyer, 1705. Hardcover. Contemporary full tree calf, decorated in gilt boards and raised band spine. Very good. 231 pages. A collection of recipes by various authors compiled over several centuries with roots in both Greek and Roman cuisine. Notaker states, unlike other bibliographies, "the recipes have wrongly been attributed to the 5th century Roman gourmand, Marcus Gavius Apicius, of whom many anecdotes were told in antiquity (336). Written as primarily lists of ingredients with no indications of quantities or directions, this simple and direct style seems to have been used straight through the Middle Ages. As this treatise was copied over the years, additional guidance was added, some dietetic cookery, medical treatises, and agricultural and domestic sciences. This 1705 edition was translated and contains commentary by Martin Lister (1639-1712), the physician to Queen Anne from 1709 until his death. Lister, a "Modernist" of his time tried to argue that Apicius was less…

TITLE: THE OLD METHOD OF ELABORATION OF THE TEQUILA MEZCAL WINE Described in the novel 'Nieves' in the 19th century by José López Portillo y Rojas - 1887. This exquisitely made artist book features a text written in 1887 by Mexican novelist José López Portillo y Rojas (1850-1923) - a short novel, entitled "Nieves". The author describes his family memories of the mezcal haciendas and old distillery factories. The artist, Nacho Gómez Arriola introduces this work with the thoughts: "Collective memory is composed of scraps of stories or personal facts recorded in time, which, when added, nourish and give identity to the communities." In this case, Gómez Arriola is referring to the community of Jalisco, and the "mezcaleras" or plantations of Agave Tequilana, and the evocative descriptions of the ancestral process of making…
