Interspersed within the recipes are literary quotes and excerpts. Henry Siegel and Frank Cooper were running a highly successful department store in Chicago during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition when they envisioned a larger store in New York City. This colossal, steel-framed, Beaux-Arts style structure,was designed by DeLemos & Cordes and at the time it was built it was the largest store in the world. This cookbook features many recipes that were fashionable at the time, but a couple recipes stand out, including a recipes for Opossum, Fricassee of Squirrels (using two squirrels), and how "To Cook a Deer's Head in Camp." Covers worn, internal pages toned, lacking a leaf between title page and preface.

Deck sports included Ladies Turtle Race, Ladies Nail Driving Contest, Ladies & Gentlemen: Shaving Contest, Feeding the Baby, Children's Pie Eating Contest, rounded out by Musical Chairs. Fellow passengers (listed) served at the Chairman, Starter, Recorder and Judge. The S.S. Malolo was built by William Cramp & Sons in Philadelphia in 1926. When built, the Malolo was the largest and most technically advanced liner of her time, and considered the most luxurious liner to have been built in the United States. The Malolo cruised the Pacific, Asia, and Australia with a West coast trip departing from San Francisco and making its way to Hawaii. One broadside is creased at middle.

A collection of recipes by various authors compiled over several centuries with roots in both Greek and Roman cuisine. Notaker states, unlike other bibliographies, "the recipes have wrongly been attributed to the 5th century Roman gourmand, Marcus Gavius Apicius, of whom many anecdotes were told in antiquity (336). Written as primarily lists of ingredients with no indications of quantities or directions, this simple and direct style seems to have been used straight through the Middle Ages. As this treatise was copied over the years, additional guidance was added, some dietetic cookery, medical treatises, and agricultural and domestic sciences. This exquisitely made artist book features a text written in 1887 by Mexican novelist José López Portillo y Rojas (1850-1923) - a short novel, entitled "Nieves". The author describes his family memories of the mezcal haciendas and old distillery factories. The artist, Nacho Gómez Arriola introduces this work with the thoughts: "Collective memory is composed of scraps of stories or personal facts recorded in time, which, when added, nourish and give identity to the communities."
