NY: Doubleday, 1971. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo. 302pp. Stated first edition. Black cloth with blue and gilt spine titles. VG/VG. Light shelfwear, pushing at spine ends. Purple remainder spray on base of textblock. In an unclipped "$6.95" jacket with moderate edgewear, a few short tears, some rubbing/fraying at spine ends, and mild toning to rear panel. One of four historical novels by Lafferty, best known for his unique body of science fiction. Doubleday chose to alter Lafferty's original title "Alaric: The Day the World Ended" in order to promote the book as a history. However, Lafferty acknowledged privately that the book was "really a novel all the way." United Mythologies Press republished the work under its original title in 1993.

Description:
Terre Haute, Indiana: Science-Fiction Studies, 1975. Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo. Staple-bound wraps. Two consecutive volumes of the journal Science-Fiction Studies: #7 = Volume 2, Part 3, November 1975; #8 = Volume 3, Part 1, March 1976. Both volumes 100pp. Of particular interest to collectors of Ursula K. Le Guin. Volume #7, "The Science Fiction of Ursula K. Le Guin," contains nearly a dozen critical reflections on Le Guin's work, including contributions from Ian Watson, Darko Suvin, and Fredric Jameson. Also included is the first print appearance of Le Guin's brief but fiercely argued essay "American SF and the Other," in which she attacks the latent sexism and racism of much science fiction: "SF has either totally ignored women, or presented them as squeaking dolls subject to instant rape by monsters." Volume #8 contains Le Guin's "A Response to the Le Guin Issue," as well as a brief note in which she defends "American SF and the…

Description:
Portland: Encore Publishing, 1977. Soft cover. Fine. Quarto; 30pp.; saddle-stapled in black-and-white wraps. Signed by Le Guin on the front cover, which features a pen-and-ink portrait of her by Henk Pander. Also signed by Vonda N. McIntyre at her contribution. A Portland-area arts periodical, distributed to attendees of The Oregon Symphony Orchestra, The Portland Opera, etc. This issue features a two-page spread of Le Guin's work: two very short stories ("Ghost Story" and "Courtroom Scene"), a poem ("Everest"), and a block-print illustration of a dragon. Science-fiction writer Vonda N. McIntyre has also contributed a two-page essay on Le Guin titled "Using the Language with Delight." While "Everest" was included in Le Guin's 1981 poetry collection Hard Words, we find no record of the two short stories ever having been collected in book form. A fine copy of this interesting piece for collectors of Le Guin.

NY: Atheneum, 1974. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Third printing. Octavo; 224pp.; black cloth with metallic purple spine titles and front panel design, in dust jacket. Together the two undertake a journey to the land of the dead to confront the dark wizard Cob. Rust-colored adhesive stains on endpapers; faint tape ghosts on boards. A small abrasion has roughened the cloth near the bottom tip of the front board. Unclipped "$6.95" jacket faded from purple to blue along the spine panel, with light general edgewear and curling.
