He was nicknamed Il Bamboccio (puppet) due to a body deformity. Though his style of painting was at first disdained by fellow Italian painters, his works later became very desirable and van Laer was overall very successful and influential, his followers became known as the Bamboccianti. Body of Christ lying on the ground, his head resting on the Vrigin, supported by another Mary; with St. John holding ChristÕs left hand and displaying its wound to St. Mary Magdalene. Known for a facial deformity (some will state syphilis), RembrandtÕs portrait of Gerard at age 25, is a famous one. He was influenced by Rembrandt, and later French neo-classical.
