Description:
578 pages, marbled end-papers. A number of scuff marks, corners bumped and a little foxing here and there, but otherwise a tight clean copy with no tears or damage; interior of book in very good condition, with a few pencil marks, including owner's name. First edition of Lepsius's (1810-1884) famous and (very readable in translation by the Horner sisters) account of the 1842-45 expedition which arguably laid the foundation for virtually all serious subsequent Egyptological study. Lepsius, a highly accomplished Prussian, was the first professional, serious scholar to study the antiquities of Egypt, travelling from Thebes to Khartoum, discovering the Decree of Canopus, adding significantly to the understanding of hieroglyphics, and producing a compendium of Egyptian antiquities which is still valuable today. These letters were written to give a more general audience access to the excitement and adventure of discovery and a sense of what it meant to travel the Nile.
