During his time as an MP, Wardle developed an interest in corruption in the army. Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany was the then commander in chief of the Army. Wardle's continued pressing of his case led to the duke's resignation as commander-in-chief. Due to his parliamentary privilege Wardle was able to fight against the government's libel action against the press which was intended to prevent the accusations against the Duke from becoming public.
