Description:
Paris: Garnier Freres, 1854. Early printing of this illustrated edition, first published in 1838-40. Large octavo (10 1/2 x 7 inches; 266 x 178 mm.). Publisher's quarter green morocco over green pebbled cloth over boards. Covers ruled in blind, spine with four raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, watered silk paper end-leaves, all edges gilt. Collating [4], xxiv, 598, [1, epitaph], [3, blank]. Inserted engraved frontispiece and 240 engraved illustrations of the fables as well as numerous engraved head and tail pieces. A Near Fine copy. "In these designs, the most popular he ever drew, Grandville presents La Fontaine's beasts acting like men and sometimes costumed like them. Since La Fontaine's poems are a veiled commentary on human behavior, this formula works to admiration. Even Oudry's drawings do not always match Grandville's in psychological penetration, however superior they may be in other respects. Grandville is effective as well with uncostumed animals,…

London: Macmillan, 1864. First edition. Near Fine. Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and boards. Corners gently bumped; small split to cloth at top of rear joint. Blue coated endpapers. Hinges strengthened. Internally a tight, clean, copy without the typical spatter or signs of use associated with kitchen texts. Collates viii, 306, [6, adverts]: complete, including the two front plates. A scarce example of a cookery text designed for an emerging class of elegant middle class women, the present is listed at only 5 institutions on OCLC, none of these in the U.S. It is currently the only copy on the market. "After reading several books on French Cookery, it struck me that none of them were appropriate to the class which most wanted them -- I mean the class rich enough to have good dinners, and still which cannot afford to keep a chef...My intention is to write for ladies who wish either to be able to point out to their cooks the defects they find in their ways of cooking or for…

London: Thomas Worrall, 1729. First edition in English. Contemporary calf rebacked to style with morocco and gilt label to spine. Corners renewed. Retaining the original endpapers. Contemporary ownership signature of "Suzanna Smith her Book. 1739" to front endpaper. Marginal loss not affecting text at ix-x. Measuring 160 x 90mm and collating xii, 156: bound without rear blank, else complete. A scarce book, showing a mother's equal concern for the education and happiness of her children regardless of gender, ESTC locates only 11 copies (5 of these in the U.S.). It is currently the only copy on the market. The Marchioness de Lambert, hailed by contemporaries as "famous for the purity of her morals and the sublimity of her intellect," was an influential presence in the saloniere culture of her time (Belfast Monthly Magazine 6:33). For all of France's calls for "educational reform" bringing "equal or improved access to education for girls," concrete change was slow to set in; and because "women who…

Ownership stamp of Lady Ulrica Thynne (d. 1916) to front endpaper. A Near Fine copy, with a bit of light scattered foxing throughout. Measuring 180 x 110mm and collating complete including half and full titles: [6], 63, [1, blank]. A scarce work in translation which was only distributed among friends and family, OCLC reports copies of Giustina at only 6 libraries. The present is the only example on the market. A narrative poem in three cantos, Giustina is a romance set in Spain but clearly commenting on the hypocrisy of patriarchy and the English marriage economy. Driven by "that deep confiding trust which flows from the chaste Fondness only woman knows," Giustina chooses Alonzo as her mate. She is, after all, pure of heart and shaped by the advice that a woman should not be mercenary. The great tragedy for Giustina and…

Northridge: Lord John Press, 1983. First edition. Fine. Presentation copy, outside of limited numbered 150 copies and 50 numbered copies specially bound, signed by the author and illustrator on half title. Fine in red marbled boards with black leather backstrip. Trivial scuff near corners, otherwise Fine. Interior with decorative tissue sheet bound before half title and haunting illustrations throughout; bright and clean. Although acclaimed for her dystopian and science fiction tales, Le Guin turns pen to her local environment in this chapbook. Created with her friend, the artist Henk Pander, the book is a response to Mount St. Helens' 1980 eruption and the physical devastation left behind on the natural landscape. As she described it, in order to get a pass to the crater or "Red Zone" (from which the title is drawn) Le Guin, Pander, and photographer Ron Cronin "pulled a few governmental strings. We announced that we were artists with a selfless desire to record this historical event in pictures…

[New York]: John J. O'Brien & Son Printers, 1894. First edition. Near Fine. Original pamphlet promoting the Constitutional Amendment Campaign events hosted by the New York City Woman Suffrage League. 4 pages including self-wraps. Slight chipping to second page, and scattered light foxing at fold and margins. Overall an exceptional copy of this rare pamphlet. OCLC reports no institutionally held copies, and the Programme does not appear in the modern auction record. 1893-1894 proved to be critical years for the New York suffragists. During that time "New York State held a convention to revise its Constitution...women suffragists had lobbied for a place at this Convention in order to support an amendment that would grant women in New York the right to vote. At the request of suffragists, both Governor Hill and Governor Flower recommended that women be allowed to sit as delegates on the Constitutional Convention. On multiple occasions, prominent New York suffragists such as Susan B. Anthony and Mary…

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1960. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. A Near Fine copy of the book in a Very Good+ dust jacket. Spine a trifle cocked and a previous owner's name on the front paste-down. Dust jacket with the edge of the flaps skinned (after jacket protector removal), some minor creases to the jacket panels, but generally a fresh example of the jacket. Housed in a quarter-leather green slipcase with chemise. Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning coming of age novel, set in Maycomb, Alabama. An American classic, the novel took over two years for Lee to write- it was inspired by her own upbringing. (In fact, Lee's father was a lawyer who had defended black clients at the cost of his practice). Its production was not without difficulty and Lee once became so angry over the course of writing the novel that she tossed the manuscript out a window. The book has never been out of print, sold tens of millions of copies, and is required reading for the American adolescent. To Kill a Mockingbird…

St. Sulpice, 1830. Contemporary roan ruled in gilt with title stamped to spine, measuring 145 x 110mm and comprised of 85 manuscript pages. Spreads of hand-drawn illustrations to versos facing autograph text in English on rectos alternated with blank spreads. Loosely inserted manuscript leaf at front. Copied from Mary Ann Rundall's Symbolic Illustrations of the History of England (London, 1815), the present work is beautifully executed and showcases a young woman's talent and interest in British and European history, sparked in large part by the publication of another woman. Cecile Josephine Leroux (b. 1806) was born in France and emigrated to Kent at an unknown age; UK paris records show that she married Charles Roffe in 1834 before being widowed and taking work as a French teacher and boarding school principal in Berkshire. Leading into her adulthood, she created this lovely copy of the historic emblems and symbols of England. Her illustrations are incredibly precise and her calligraphy beautiful…

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1927. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. Number 922 of a thousand copies signed by the author and publisher. A very nearly Fine copy of the book with some spotting to the lower board. In the publisher's original glassine with a few small chips and tears and also with some spotting to the lower panel. Lacking the publisher's box. Written with an eye for the mechanical aspects of his aviation journey, Charles Lindbergh records his pioneer solo flight across the Atlantic in We. Lindberg wrote this book only two months after completing his historic flight, which would inspire Amelia Earhart and countless other pilots to continue pushing the boundaries of modern aviation. Horace Green, in his 1927 review of We, applauds the meticulous attention to detail revealed in the pilot's narrative, noting that "the outstanding feature is the fact that Lindbergh's success was laid on careful foundations... his plans are exact, careful and weighed in the balance" (The New York…

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1903. First edition. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of the book, lacking the original dust jacket. First printing, July, 1903 stated on the copyright page. White paint a bit rubbed on the front board. Housed in a custom red quarter-leather slipcase with chemise. A Klondike Gold Rush adventure novel told from the point of view of the dog Buck, The Call of the Wild is also a consideration of the thin line that separates "civilized" creatures from their primal origins. Though he begins life as the pampered and much-loved pet of a California gentleman, Buck is stolen and forced into service as a sled dog in the Alaska Yukon. The lowest member of his pack, Buck faces abuse from his incompetent human owners as well as violence within his team as the dogs jockey for higher positions that aide their survival. Known best for his works The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Revere's Ride, and The Wreck of the Hesperus, Longfellow was a towering literary figure in his own time. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition. Very Good. Second state with "Devine" on contents page. Inscribed by the author: "To Mr. and Mrs. Pell | the best publicity agents an author ever had. Affectionately Anita Loos | Nov. 3, 1925." Book Very Good with spine a bit dulled and cocked, several newspaper clippings are tipped in on the early pages, presumably publicity work of the Pells. A comic novel about the roaring 20s and a runaway best seller. Inspired in part by H. L. Mencken and supported by him. Edith Wharton declared it was "The great American novel." There have been numerous adaptations for stage and screen, the most famous being the 1953 film starring Marilyn Monroe where she sang "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." Quite uncommon with a personal inscription in the year of publication. Very Good.
