Two long essays by the author, "The Critics' Response to Chagall's Gouaches for the Fables of La Fontaine: 1920-1930," and "Chagall as Illustrator of La Fontaine's Fables or How to Leave Russia Behind and Become French." Paris: Editions Nilsson, 1929. First Edition Thus. Softcover. Fair. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Maggy Monier. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and relatively sturdy. Heavy card stock wraps, illustrated beautifully in an Art Deco design on glassine wraps that are torn on the rear and with a large chip missing. The wraps have been separated from the text-block, which is quite solid, and then been glue-repaired quite tightly. Scarce in the trade, there being currently no copies available on-line of this short treatise, which is translated into English from French as "Of the Zodiac Represented on the Church of Strasbourg," and with several duotone engravings, quite fine, including in fold-out, representing signs of the Zodiac. They depict scenes of agriculture and oenophilia, including grapes-stomping, animal-husbandry and a Janus-faced man eating bread but sans his right arm below the elbow. Oddly, many figures are missing a limb or have had such amputated, not all, but many.
