Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, dbd, 8 pp. Disbound, foxing and aging throughout; else about very good. James Monroe was the acting Secretary of State that presented the case before Congress. Munroe indicated, based on testimony of a Captain Williams, who was a prisoner of war of the British in the Bahamas, Negroes taken from the United States were being sold there. The brief report suggests the Negroes were taken from Virginia, and were being sold in the Bahamas for considerable sums.

Pamphlet, 8vo, stitched, dbd, 20 pp. Removed, no half title, a little wear on title, trimmed, pages would be loose but for stitching, some aging and browning; otherwise very good. This scarce title is a report on claims against the United States by Fulwar Skipwith (1765-1839). Skipwith's home was robbed while he worked for the government in Paris, and he expected some reinbursment. Skipwith seems to have held several diplomatic posts, and he seems to have played a fairly important role negotiating the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. James Madison, who was The Speaker of the House at the time, is a contibutor to this report.

A feature article discusses Joe Louis probable return match with heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles. Louis got back in contention with a knockout of Lou Savold. There is another feature article by Nat Fleischer, about Sugar Ray Robinson. Also coverage of a rising star, Walter Cartier, who had a nice start, but didn't have a great record with top contenders. He would eventually become an actor.

This issue is probably one of the most important issues of the 1940s. The historic first fight between heavyweight champ Joe Louis and challenger Billy Conn is nicely covered with words and pictures. Conn ahead on points, thanks to some great boxing skills, blows his chance by trying to knock out Louis late in the fight. Despite the victory, Louis lost the PR battle, as Conn, the smaller man, was seen as a hero by almost defeating the champ. Boxer Sammy Angott is featured on the cover.

This issue contains an article about the contenders for Jersey Joe Walcott's heavyweight corn. This would include future champ Rocky Marciano who is one of the fighters featured on the cover. Another article explains how club fighters have benefited from TV exposure.

This issue provides annual rankings and features an article on Sugar Ray Robinson as the fighter of the year. Robinson regained his middleweight crown by beating Randy Turpin in their second bout. Ring names the Walcott-Charles bout as the fight of the year. Walcott's knockout of Charles earned him the heavyweight title.

There is coverage of Jake LaMotta's winning middleweight title fight over Tiberio Mitri. Another article covers Sugar Ray Robinson's problems with the New York Boxing Commission.

Unusual Ring issue that features coverage of fighters outside the United States. The cover story features South African Bantamweight Champion, Vic Toweel, who is shown on the cover. Other articles include coverage of Marciano’s fight with Lee Savold, Kid Gavilan's victory over Bobby Dykes, and Japanese fighters invade the world of boxing.

There is even a short article on the 30 million people who were expected to watch the middleweight fight between Jake LaMotta and Ray Robinson.

Still a decent copy, and an important issue. Feature article on Rocky Marciano who won fighter of the year honors. Some pictures of Rocky’s last fight, which was against Archie Moore. Another feature article names the Basilio-DeMarco bout as fight of the year. A rare and interesting article on how Dr. Joyce Brothers who won the $64,000 question on TV by answering some incredible difficult questions on boxing.

British heavyweight champ Bruce Woodcock featured on the cover. Woodcock is covered among upcoming heavyweight fights. An article naming Sugar Ray Robinson the best fighter in all divisions is included. This is probably the start of the love affair boxing historians have had with Robinson, often naming him the best pound for pound fighter in history.

Hinges split, top cover detached, spine partially split from opening, a few pages are loose, lacks half title and leaf A8 Volume II (last page of the preface), some soiling. While this work would originally be published in England in 1665, the first American edition would appear almost 100 years later. Each volume contains its own index of martyrs. Sabin calls the work "A good specimen of American printing". Sabin 44124. Evans 5991.

This work includes 25 steel engravings of important places in Europe, including Naples, Rome, Paris and Amsterdam. There are also 12 attractive folding maps and charts, colored in outline. Maps of Europe, France, North America, South America, Asia, Africa and the Ancient World are included.

Very slight wear at extremities, normal aging and browning; otherwise very good plus. Manderson (1837-1811) was born in Philadelphia was a lawyer, a distinguished Civil War veteran, and eventually a U.S. senator. He joined the Union army and served as an officer with the Nineteenth Ohio Infantry. He served under William T. Sherman during the Georgia campaign, but was severely wounded and had to resign from the army in April 1865. After the war Manderson moved to Omaha, and would be elected to the U.S. Senate in 1883. This work is about a pair of pistols presented to him by his battalion after the Battle of Stone's River, which were lost after an attack on a supply train later in the War. This report is Senate document 99, presented to the 34th Congress (1st session), which presents an interesting account of the Chinese coolie trade in a series of letters and documents. A key focus of this report is on the transportation of Chinese labor in America. However, there is also discussion on the character and treatment of Chinese laborers. There appears to be a notion that they were treated better than Negro Slaves, and there was a concern that they might develop a relationship with slaves in the West Indies. The report includes some information about how Chinese laborers felt about their situation. This report was orchestrated by William Learned Marcy (1786-1857), who was Secretary of State for President Franklin Pierce. This work represents an important exploration of previously unknown parts of present day Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arkansas, by one of the major figures in the settlement of the frontier. “Contains authentic information regarding the peculiar customs of the Indians of the southern plains. Their mode of warfare, their invariable violation of the chastity of female prisoners, and the condition of their dwellings and villages, are particularly described”(Sabin). Wagner-Camp adds that “Marcy’s report abounds in topographical and geological detail.” The plates include a number of views, along with those on paleontology, zoology, and botany.
