Original publishers maroon cloth with elaborate gilt-stamped cover and spine design consisting of all-over ivy on trellis, gilt lettering, by Frederic C. Gordon, who was the artist commissioned to design the front cover of Stephen Crane's "The Black Riders," published in 1895. Signed by Gordon, F.C.G., appearing on lower spine in gilt. Fully illustrated, with prospectus for the autograph edition laid-in. A pristine copy with absolutely no signs of wear, in the original purple paper covered two-part card box with printed paper label on cover denoting title, author publisher, etc. (box a bit worn at edges, otherwise very good). Illustrated with drawings and photographs throughout. A rare survival of a gorgeous Turn of the Century Art Nouveau gilt-stamped cover.

London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1858. First edition. First edition. 8vo. 323pp. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth. The first edition of George MacDonald's first story to be published in book form. A fine copy in its original state, finely blind-stamped olive cloth with diamond shaped central blossoms and petal motif, elaborate borders on both covers, spine with gilt stamped leaf emblem and lettering, original yellow endpapers. MacDonald's faerie romance was aimed at an adult audience. The similarities between MacDonald and Lewis Carroll, who published Alice in Wonderland eight years later abound, culminating with Carroll asking MacDonald and his wife to read the draft of Alice. About as fine a copy as ever seen by this enduring and important classic. The copy of Sir Charles Oman (inscribed) ,noted military historian, and later, John Sparrow, English academic and book collector, both bookplates appear at front. In superb custom made chemise and green morocco-backed slipcase.

Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1919. First edition. First edition. First issue book and wrapper, satisfying all of the points in Nudelman A53. In original white printed glossy dust wrapper with central color illustration offset in light brown background, lettering in black on cover and spine, no other writing on the wrapper (as called for). Beige cloth with bold gilt panel border on front cover surrounding color insert, blue embossed borders. Spine with vignette and lettering all blocked in gilt. Top edges gilt. Eight full-page color plates, color title-page, color insert on cover, blue pictorial illustrated endpapers all by Jessie Willcox Smith. Book is pristine, very fine with no signs of wear. The gilt on the cover and spine are as new. The wrapper is very good or better, completely in tact with only a few random small chips, esp. to corners and base of spine. A very scarce wrapper for an early Smith book.

London: Strahan & Co, 1872. First edition. First edition. Original blue cloth with bold gilt design on cover and spine, stamped in gilt and black with pictorial design on cover. First edition, first issue with publisher's name at foot of spine and with crescent moon and flaming torch in gilt outside of the front cover circle. 30 illustrations by Arthur Hughes, all edges gilt. In collector's blue morocco case with decorative gilt spine, previous ownership inscription in ink on front free endpaper, minor spotting and browning, minimal soiling to lower board, spine sunned, bumped. Scarce first edition of MacDonald's second full-length fairy tale. In a letter to his wife in February 1871, Macdonald refers to the book which would be published a few months later: "...I know it is as good a work of the kind as I can do, and I think it will be the most complete thing I have done..." Seldom seen on the market today, the book was widely handled by children and rarely seen in presentable condition.

First issue with half-title, and superb woodcut illustrations by Arthur Hughes throughout. 13 pp. of advertisements at end. AEG. In nice collector's folding box. Rear cover neatly detached, otherwise a very nice copy, text block starting, minor browning and spotting, minor soiling to covers, a book rarely found in exemplary condition. . No priority is known regarding tan versus green cloth.

Publisher's black cloth, spine panel titled in gold, white and blue floral endpapers. Title page printed in red and black. This Second Edition is identical in format to the First Edition, published less than a year earlier, and quite scarce, more so in nice condition, as our. Lilith, a rather extravagant fantasy novel, explores the journey into another world with a librarian who takes the form of a raven. Cloth slightly worn at head & heel of spine and corner tips; a few small marks, spine panel with a slight lean. A very good, tight copy with both inner hinges in tact.

Three large original pen and black ink elaborate border designs for Macdougall's celebrated, "The Book of Ruth," executed in 1896, heightened with white, traces of graphite, two signed lower right, one dated '96, on thick wove paper and artist's board, each sheet approx. 475 x 360 mm. (18 3/4 x 14 1/4 in), with image size 10 x 11 1/2". Some pencil annotations as instructions to printer. Occasional spotting and light browning, surface dirt, unframed, circa 1896, (3). The book was issued later in 1896 by J. M. Dent, fully illustrated by Macdougall. "This book is filled with exquisite decorations. Patterns of great beauty flow around the pages, and testify to the power of invention possessed by the illustrator." [The Spectator, review of the Dent & Co. first edition of "The Book of Ruth", 19th December 1896, p. 24] A most rare and important example of what can only be termed the height of English Art Nouveau book design.

Publishers red-brown cloth with extremely scarce cover Margaret Armstrong with design stamped in white and dark brown of stylized leaf, vine and blossom pattern, also appearing on spine. Two copies, the second being a later impression (1910). First with wear to spine, soiled and foxed internally. The later impression, very good. Illustrated by Fanny Cory. No copies located in marketplace of this scarce Margaret Armstrong cover design.

Probably Cobden-Sanderson's Own Copy, signed by the famed bookbinder innovator and artisan, at the end under the publisher's colophon: "T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, 11 Oct, 1905." Printed at the Chiswick Press, Mackail's address was given in the William Morris Labour Church a year earlier and now printed for the first time.

Philadelphia: Privately Printed by Mackellar, Smiths & Jordan For Friends, 1896. Large Folio. Bound in original cram cloth with stunning graphic pictorial cover of a man resting in a sauna with elbow on window sill, showing outside garden, in wonderful Art Nouveau style. This is an extremely scarce work published by the famous Type Foundry company, Mackellar, Smiths and Jordan. Thomas Mackellar, referred by many to be the "father of American Printing," published "The American Printer" in 1866, which is still used today, and its day, was considered the "bible" of printing. Thomas Mackellar was also a poet with about a dozen books published by noted firms in the mid to late 19th Century. An outstanding copy, one of only two found on the Net, and the other is completely restored. Cover wear, soiling, loosely seated in fragile binding, but a nice copy a scarce and attractive book describing the accomplishments of this noted printing firm.

The binding has longitudinal tears along inner and outer margins of spine, corners chipped, internally very well preserved, given the very thin nature of the paper used. AEG. Original publishers half-parchment with exquisite and historical cover image (also appearing as full-size title page) considered to be one of the earliest appearances of a distinctly Art Nouveau design in a printed book. Half-title, decorative "Art Nouveau" title-page, and striking mezzotint frontispiece by G. Allen (after Mackmurdo). In 1882 Mackmurdo founded the Century Guild "to render all branches of Art the sphere no longer of the tradesman but of the Artist," and in the following year designed the striking title and cover design to his Wren's City Churches, which, "with its swirling pattern, is one of the precursors of English art nouveau." An elegant and sumptuous full green crushed levant binding by McDonald, signed in gilt pallet at rear dentelle, "Bound by MacDonald," consisting of triple fillet gold framing, and the spine very ornately detailed in four compartments with title and author in the author two. Ornate gilt dentelles, attractive marbled endsheet. TEG. Very fine example of James McDonald's work, the fine Scottish bookbinder who came to the US and set up shop in NYC in 1880, very quickly becoming one of the preeminent bookbinders in America. WITH A FULL-PAGE INSCRIPTION BY MAETERLINCK in French on the verso of the frontispiece, and signed by Maeterlinck, in fountain pen.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orne, by T. Bentley, 1806. First Edition. First Edition. 172pp. Modern half morocco, with superb marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments with five raised bands, uncut. Half-title, engraved frontispiece by R. H. Cromek after William Blake, and three plates, one a folding map. Contains the first recorded account of Blake's life by a contemporary. Malkin knew Blake well, and herein devotes 24pp. in the preface to an account of his friend's life and genius, largely recorded from conversations with Blake himself. The preface also contains the first typographic printing of several of Blake's poems including a variant of "The Tyger." There is light foxing to plates and occasionally text, short tear to outer margin of p.i/ii.. Quite scarce.
