It contains descriptions of the provinces and its main cities, customs, climate, industry, agriculture, etc. Included are a map of Belgium, a city map of Antwerp and a city map of Brussels, the latter with an extensive key to features indicated in the map. The two hand-coloured engraved plates depict Belgian women in traditional costumes; the aquatint plates include a view of Antwerp, the castle at Laken, and a view of Brussels; and the other plates show the theatre at Lille (Rijssel) and a ground plan of the park at Brussels (double-page). [13] ll.Charming collection of 13 sepia aquatint plates with views of Amsterdam, published by Evert Maaskamp. They include the Royal Palace (interior and exterior), the stained glass windows of the Oude Kerk, a theatre, a concert at the Felix Meritis and several views of Amsterdam's famous canals. All but the last plate were also issued by Maaskamp in 4 instalments with a letterpress title-page, Nouvelle statistique historique d'Amsterdam, each instalment accompanied by 8 pages of text, dated 1812 by Landwehr. At least the present series appears to be later, for the laid paper tissue guards, from a single paper stock, match one from 1826 (Voorn, Noord-Holland 184). With bookplate on paste-down. One plate with a marginal water stain, not affecting the image, some occasional offsetting on the tissue guards and the back of previous plates, some other plates slightly stained in the margins, but otherwise in very good condition. VIII, 71, [1 blank] pp.First edition of a guide for young artists detailing the craft of drawing landscapes, including the rendition of shadows, use of water colour and hand-colouring of engraved prints. The author Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834), at the time a well-known Dutch engraver and print publisher, made all but one of the plates. They include the same two landscape scenes in two and three different techniques (engraving, aquatint, and hand-coloured aquatint), a romantic scene with a tree in the foreground and a bridge in the back, and a frontispiece with guide lines for (horizon) perspective.With a 5 cm tear along a fold of the frontispiece and a tiny tear in the margin, the boards slightly rubbed along the extremities, and the spine discoloured. The 9 photograph illustrations depict daily life and architecture of the people that live at the oasis. Historically, Al-Ahsa was the main city in Al-Bahrain province, making up most of its population and providing most of its agricultural output.In very good condition.

Divided into 16 books, it describes the Portuguese discoveries and missionary work in India, the East Indies, Persia, Japan, China, Brazil and other parts of America. "Maffei writes extensively about Brazil, describing it very accurately" (Borba de Moraes), in fact devoting three chapters to the subject. Book six is devoted to China and includes a description of tea, to which Maffei ascribed several health benefits, regular consumption resulting in a "long and healthy life" ("Elles les ... fait vivre longues années, presque sans aucune langueur", p. 230). The translation is by Abbé Michel de Pure (1634-1680). [72], 478, [2 blank]; 401, [7] pp.Early 17th-century edition of a classic work on "the Indies", including both the West and East Indies, considered the best (Sabin) and the most complete (Borba de Moraes) of the many Latin editions. Most of Maffei's work is concerned with the Portuguese conquests and the Jesuit stations in India, the East Indies, and regions around the Arabian Sea to about 1557. The first 5 books appear to follow rather closely the model of Barros. Book VI, dealing with China and book XII, which is mainly concerned with Japan, are heavily indebted to Valignano's account of those countries. The second part includes a selection of Jesuit letters written from the Indies and translated by Maffei. The work by John Hay (1546-1618), De rebus Japonicis, Indicis, et Peruanis Epistolae recentiores, called for on the title, is not present as with the most copies. [40], 24, [4], 25-234, [2 blank] pp.Rare first and only edition of the biography of the Augustinian friar Alipio de Luca di San Giuseppe (1617-1645) from Palermo, by Francesco Maria Maggio (1612-1686), an Italian missionary in the Middle East.Ottoman pirates captured Alipio's ship on 1 July 1643 and brought it to Tripoli. He converted to Islam, but repented and was martyred on 17 February 1645 when he told the Pasha (Mehmed Saqizli) that he wished to return to his Christian faith. The account continues after his death, telling about his beatification and declaration of sainthood. The plates show the martyrdom and the holy relics of the Saint.With owner's inscription. One of the three plates slightly larger than the bookblock and folded in at the foot, otherwise in very good condition. The collection reflects on human virtue and vice, excerpting passages on morality - as well as the natural sciences - from authors as wide-ranging as the Persian astrologer Abu Mashar (Albumasar) and the Arabic philosophers Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and Ibn Rushd (Averroes), but also Terence, Saint Paul, and Chaucer. The legendary Maria Malibran was known equally for her unrivalled voice, passionate personality and rare beauty. See died young, at the age of 28. She had met and married the wealthy Eugene Malibran in New York in 1826 when she was performing in the service of her tyrannical father. It is believed that her father set up the marriage for his personal financial gain. But it turned out Malibran was not wealthy at all and declared bankruptcy soon after. Although they never divorced, Maria left her husband after a year and returned to Europe, writing and sending the present letter from Norwich in England. [4], 36 pp.Letter by the French colonialist and plantation owner Pierre Victor Malouet (1750-1814) to a French(?) member of the parliament, which he wrote as "deputy of the colony of Saint-Domingue". Saint-Domingue (now called Haiti) was a former French colony, until its independency in 1804. In this letter, Malouet describes the importance of America and colonies as Saint-Domingue for Europe and he also particularly gives attention to the merits of the American colonies and the poltical and economical implications of losing them. It was published during the Haitan Revolution (1791-1804), when self-liberated slaves revolted against the French colonial rule. The proposal included the placement throughout the country of so-called "Manby mortars" throughout the country. This mortar fired a shot with a line to a wrecked ship and could be lighted with a special wind-proof pistol. The line could be used for communication purposes, as well as to connect to specially designed lifeboats.George William Manby (1765-1854) was an English author and inventor. Appointed barrack-master at Great Yarmouth in 1803, he witnessed the wrecking of the brig Snipe in 1807, with over 60 casualties. This tragedy inspired him to think about both the equipment available for rescue and the means of communication between a wrecked ship and the shore. Mandelslo was attached to the diplomatic mission of the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp to Moscow and Persia. The ambassadors remained in Persia, but Mandelslo travelled further. He sailed from Hormuz to Surat and proceeded through Gujarat to Agra, Lahore, Goa, Bijapur and Malaba, visiting Ceylon, Madagascar, the Cape of Good Hope, and St. Helena on his return voyage in 1639. Before his death 5 years later, he had entrusted his rough notes to Olearius, who subsequently published them with a third part containing descriptions of the Coromandel coast, Bengal, Siam, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Bantam, the Philippines, Formosa (Tai-wan), China and Japan. It was originally written in French and is thought to have been compiled from various sources by Jehan d'Outremeuse (1338-1400) of Liege. It includes many well-known stories and illustrations of monstrous people and animals in exotic lands: a man with only one enormous foot that he can use as a parasol, a dog-headed man, a man with his face in his chest, a girl who turns into a dragon, griffins, nine-meter giants, ants that gather gold, diamonds that mate and give birth to baby diamonds and much more that spoke to the imagination. It shows his interest in archaeological research carried out in the Near East by means of voyages instigated by the German scholar Johann David Michaëlis. Manger thought this kind of research would herald a new age in our understanding of the scriptures. Some minor marginal browning and a couple small marginal tears, but still in very good condition. 77, [2], [1 blank] ll.Seventh known copy of an early edition of an important treatise on pharmacology and medical botany, by Giovanni Giacomo Manlio di Bosco (fl. 1490-post 1500). It is a commentary on ancient Arabic and Greek pharmacological works, especially the Arabic treatises of Yuhanna Ibn Masawayh (ca. 777-857), a Nestorian Christian physician from Assyria who taught at the academy in Gundeshapur, Iran, and was personal physician to four caliphs. It gives instructions for preparing numerous medicines, indicating the quantities of the ingredients (simples, each derived from a single plant) and describing each ingredient. In 1906, Mannerheim, then a colonel, was sent on an expedition to Asia. "The object of this expedition was to study conditions in the interior of Northern China, collect statistical materials and perform various tasks of a military nature", says Mannerheim in the preface. Russia wanted to know the state of affairs in China due to the reforms and modernization undertaken by the Qing Dynasty. Besides that, Mannerheim wanted to collect items of scientific interest for the National Museum in Helsinki and to study the little-known peoples living in Northern China. Collection of early fashion photographs by the renowned Parisian photographer Henri Manuel. Each shows a model before a studio background (showing a columned hall or various outdoor settings). Taken in the 1910s, the photographs show the changing fashions of the era: orientalist influences, the changes from the long narrow skirt into the war crinoline silhouette, the rise upwards of the hemline and even a pair of trousers worn under a skirt. The collection also includes several photographs showing fur-lined overcoats and military inspired velvet caps.Although the photographs bear no captions, one is stamped and inscribed on the back (visible when held up in front of a light source, as the photograph is mounted on a sheet of paper) showing clothing by the maison Lieser & Michels. According to Martins Costa, he was one of the most notable warriors of the late Middle Ages and managed to climb the social ladder because of his military prowess. De Meneses, the illegitimate and only son of the governor of Ceuta, was already knighted at the age of 15 and made captain of the Portuguese garrison in Ceuta at the age of 16. In 1436, he led an attack on the Moroccan city Tétouan and fought in the battle of Tangier a year later, which the Portuguese lost. When his father died, De Meneses did not inherit the position of governor of Ceuta because of his bastard status. Instead, he held several other positions for shorter periods of time.
