Bronxville, NY: Sarah Lawrence College, 1945. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo. Signature-bound in brown paper wraps. 122oo + unpaginated Music Supplement laid in at rear. Inscribed on the title page, "To Mr. & Mrs. G.R. MacCarthy with the compliments of the author"--presumably Betta MacCarthy, whose contribution, a thirteen page essay on Alexander Hamilton, opens the volume. Also laid in is a note, presumably also from MacCarthy, which reads: 'This is quite an interesting book -- It is put out by the faculty every 4 years for the purpose of "showing" the countries educators & stuff what S.L. students do. It is to make up for not having grades & academic rating & so on. I counted & about 1?4 of the contributors are on scholarships. As a contributor I was given 2 copies; the other students don't get it." Other contributions include fiction, poetry (both original and in translation), a section of black-and-white plates of student artwork,… Read more

Description:
Los Angeles: Press of the Pegacycle Lady, 1974. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Octavo; 20pp.; salmon boards with illustration by W. Berman tipped onto front board, lacking a jacket as issued. Rendered into English by Jack Hirschman. Number 67 of 100 copies hand-numbered and signed by Hirschman to a limitation page at rear (the print run also included 400 unsigned copies in wraps). A claustrophobic and dream-like prose tale prompted by Mallarmé's spiritual crisis of 1867; he described the work as "a rather long descent into Nothingness." The action, such as it were, concerns an eponymous hero who descends a circular stairwell to confronts his own tomb, shedding his identity in the process--a theme nicely captured by Berman's surreal cover illustration. This translation by the prolific San Francisco poet and political activist Hirschman is notable for being the first appearance of Igitur in the English language. Very good condition, with sun-fading to head… Read more

Description:
NY: Longmans, 1934. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo. 312pp. First edition. Dated, inscribed, and signed by Mathews on the front free end paper. Rust-colored cloth boards with black titles. Boards show some shelfwear. Sunning to spine panel. Bumping to top corner of textblock. Musty odor. Small abrasion to the cloth near the bottom corner of the rear board. Lacking the jacket. Though Mathews' script is somewhat difficult to parse, the inscription seems to read: 'Tulsa, April 30, 1937 For the "Little Girl at Smith," and in memory of the night at Walter Ferguson's AND in memory." Walter Ferguson was an Oklahoma politician/banker who, along with his strong wife Lucia, fought for a number of progressive issues, including women's suffrage. The Fergusons moved to Tulsa in 1928, where Walter died in 1936, which would explain the "AND in memory" at the end of the inscription. Mathews must have met the book's owner at a prior event or party at the… Read more
