He joined the ABC in Sydney as a writer, and later wrote gags for Jack Davey and Roy Rene (Mo). The poet Kenneth Slessor rounds off the book with a lively panorama of Sydney bohemian life in the 1930s and 40s. .

The Glebe (or St. Phillip's Glebe) was 400 acres given to the Church of England (Reverend Richard Johnson) by Governor Arthur Phillip in the earliest years at Port Jackson. It was church property until it evolved into one of Sydney's fashionable 19th-century suburbs, then a shabby and over-crowded area, before finally becoming trendy again, but also retaining public housing.
