Description:
London: Robert Scott 1917, 1917. First edition. 8vo. Pp. vi, 207, [1bl], 2pp adverts for books from Robert Scott's List. Original red cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. Spotting and marking to covers and some bumping to extremities. Bookseller label of Brentano's Paris on rear pastedown. Internally very good and overall this is a nice copy of a scarce title describing Macdonald's experiences serving in the French Army during the First World War. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Charles-Henry Hirsch with the author's sincere admiration". Tipped in to the front pastedown is a letter from Macdonald to Hirsch dated 4th January 1915. Written in French, it is identifiable as being to Hirsch by Macdonald's reference to Hirsch's story "Tipperary" and to his novel "Le Tigre et Coquelicot". At the time of this letter, Hirsch was regarded as an important writer and significant figure. Now almost completely forgotten, swept away by the modernists who… Read More

London: for J.Dodsley, 1780 1780, 1780. First Edition. 2 vols, 8vo, pp.xxiv, 412; [iv], 432, [x] indexes. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Paper repair to blank upper margin of first title, faint even browning. Early modern brown levant, spines in six compartments with raised bands gilt, gilt decoration in four compartments, lettered and numbered in two, marbled boards and endpapers; slight shelfwear only. Bookplate to front pastedown, contemporary ownership inscription of "Babington" dated March 1790, early pencilled marginalia throughout (most angry-looking crosses). Very good A scandalous anonymous work. Martin Madan (1726-90), first cousin of William Cowper, had already attracted public attention when, in 1750 he made the career switch from lawyer to Methodist preacher, but the impact of this book, in which he advocated polygamy and argued elaborately that it was in accordance with Christianity, was sensational. His patroness, Lady Huntingdon, told him even before publication that she had… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for J. Johnson 1803, 1803. Second edition, known as the Great Quarto edition and, with its altered title and expanded and amended text, "regarded by Malthus as a substantially new work" (ODNB). Quarto, 265x205mm. pp. viii, [4], 610. Contemporary tree calf, expertly rebacked with original spine laid down, spine lavishly decorated in gilt, black morocco label lettered in gilt. Some rubbing to extremities, bottom corners strengthened. Front pastedown has book label of Christopher Clark Geest. Some slight foxing but overall a handsome copy of an important, influential and controversial book. PMM (reference to the first edition) states that "the central idea of the essay - and the hub of Malthusian theory - was a simple one. The population of a community increases geometrically, while food supplies increase only arithmetically". When the food supply becomes insufficient, the population is reduced by what Malthus calls "vice" (contraception, homosexuality,… Read More

Description:
n.p. n.p. n.d. [pre-1775], 1775. Original drawing of classical capitals and urns with lines of perspective. Pen and brown and black ink, pencil and grey wash on laid paper without visible watermark, ruled border in brown ink. Sheet 302x218mm, window mount 350x275mm. Very slight soiling and foxing but overall in excellent condition. A very good, and rare, example of a study for an important book on perspective. In 1775 Thomas Malton the Elder (1726-1801) published A Compleat Treatise On Perspective, In Theory and Practice; on the True Principles Of Dr. Brook Taylor. This drawing is a preliminary study for plate XXII from this book. Such drawings are rare; the last to appear before this one was sold at Christie's in 2011. Malton's book was important: the Royal Academy had been founded only seven years before and in its Instrument of Foundation there was a specific requirement that the art and science of perspective be taught. A Compleat Treatise was the first book to be published on the subject… Read More

Description:
[Paris] n.p. [1910], 1910. Inscribed by Rodin to his model and lover Eve Fairfax. Photograph of Auguste Rodin seated by a marble sculpture and surrounded by framed pictures. The bottom right margin is inscribed by Rodin in ink: "Aux beaux gestes à Miss Eve Fairfax son dévoué admirateur." Image measures 215x145mm, mounted on original card measuring 245x175mm. Eve Fairfax (1871-1978: she died in York just before her 107th birthday) was Rodin's model between 1901 and 1909 and they remained close until 1914. Rodin sculpted her numerous times producing work such as the astounding "La Nature, Miss Eve Fairfax" portraying his model emerging from natural forms. For Rodin, truth to nature was a guiding principle and one which found expression in his artistic and personal relationship with Eve Fairfax whom he described as "a Diana and a satyr in one". This photograph with its heartfelt dedication is testament to their closeness. Henri Manuel (1874-1947) opened a portrait studio in Paris in 1900 with his… Read More

1972, 1972. Photo silkscreen on graph paper (900x735mm). Inscribed in pencil in the bottom margin "For Francesco - [Signed] Robert Mapplethorpe '73". An early work from an important stage in the development of Mapplethorpe's career. When he graduated from the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn in 1969, Mapplethorpe was making mixed-media collages using images torn from magazines. In 1971, he befriended John McKendry, curator of photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. McKendry allowed Mapplethorpe access to the Museum's photography archives and later that year gave him his first Polaroid camera. Mapplethorpe initially used this camera to make material for use in his assemblages but he quickly began making self-portraits and exploring the possibilities photography offered as a medium in its own right, particularly after he met Sam Wagstaff in 1972. Wagstaff probably did more than anyone to ensure that photography began to be taken seriously as an art form in America. This triptych of… Read More

Text printed in red and black. Bound in half pigskin, paste paper covered boards. Edges coloured red. Covers rubbed and worn. Internally very good with some foxing and browning but overall a very good copy of Mattsperger's "Rebus" Bible intended to introduce children to Bible stories by telling them through pictures accompanied by short simple texts. Vaduz, Liechtenstein Michael Arthur Film Productions [1979], 1979. 118 A4 leaves (plus cover) printed on recto only. Bound in a white spring binder with black card at the back and a transparent plastic cover on the front. In very good condition. A short note in "Box Office" magazine for July 30th 1979 reads: "Freezing Down will begin filming in November in Albany N.Y. as an Arthur Cohn production. Melvin Sokolsky is the director. The plot concerns a man's return to life after a cyrogenic suspension. Paul Mayersberg has written the screenplay based on the novel by Anders Bodelsen". There is, however, no trace of the film's having been made. Mayersberg's previous screenplays in the 1970s were Siddhartha and the cult science fiction film The Man who Fell to Earth, directed by Nicolas Roeg and starring David Bowie. Mayersberg wrote the screenplay to the 1983 Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence which also starred Bowie. An interesting item of unpublished sci-fi film history by… Read More

Description:
[London] [Angus McBean] February 1957. Black and white bromide print showing the couple in profile, with Eliot's face emerging from the shadows behind Valerie. Inscribed by Eliot "to Bob Giroux with affection from Tom and Valerie". Signed by Angus McBean. Mounted on cream card, on the verso is McBean's copyright stamp. In excellent condition. On 10th January 1957 T.S.Eliot married Valerie Fletcher. The ceremony, at St Barnabas Church, Kensington took place at 6.15am "by special license", Eliot said, "from the Archbishop of Canterbury in order to evade the press". Eliot was famously shy, reserved and prickly so this somewhat cloak and dagger approach to his second marriage is unsurprising. Once the news was out, though, Eliot seemed to change and his last few years (he died in January 1965) were, everyone agreed, including Eliot himself, blissfully happy. On their return from honeymoon in the south of France, the Eliots had their wedding photographs done by Angus McBean, then at the height of his fame.… Read More

The dustjacket has a small closed tear to the top edge of the lower cover and bottom edge of the front cover and some slight creasing to edges but overall is in very good condition particularly as it is rare to find this book in hardback with its dustjacket. "This collection of [McCullin's] best work is a statement of man's inhumanity to man - and is a more poignant and more powerful statement than could be made in a hundred books of words or a hundred films. The stark black and white of McCullin's pictures compel one's total attention and leave room for nothing but reality".

The earliest known full length confession by a female addict. Annie Meyers, describes her descent from "well balanced Christian woman" to "a haggard and wretched physical and mental wreck". Her problems began with Birney's Catarrh Remedy and the book traces her numerous arrests, her progressive physical decline illustrated by photographs and her eventual recovery. "I believe that I am the only living person in the world to-day who ever took 200 grains (over 12 grams) in twenty-four hours and survived". While Meyers focuses her invective primarily on cold and headache remedies, 99% of which, she claims contain cocaine, it is likely that she would have used other medicines such as asthma and hay fever snuffs,… Read More
