Internally very good and overall this is a nice copy of a scarce title describing Macdonald's experiences serving in the French Army during the First World War. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Charles-Henry Hirsch with the author's sincere admiration". Tipped in to the front pastedown is a letter from Macdonald to Hirsch dated 4th January 1915. Written in French, it is identifiable as being to Hirsch by Macdonald's reference to Hirsch's story "Tipperary" and to his novel "Le Tigre et Coquelicot". Pen and brown and black ink, pencil and grey wash on laid paper without visible watermark, ruled border in brown ink. Sheet 302x218mm, window mount 350x275mm. Very slight soiling and foxing but overall in excellent condition. A very good, and rare, example of a study for an important book on perspective. � In 1775 Thomas Malton the Elder (1726-1801) published A Compleat Treatise On Perspective, In Theory and Practice; on the True Principles Of Dr. Brook Taylor. This drawing is a preliminary study for plate XXII from this book. Such drawings are rare; the last to appear before this one was sold at Christie's in 2011. Malton's book was important: the Royal Academy had been founded only seven years before and in its Instrument of Foundation there was a specific requirement that the art and science of perspective be taught. [Paris] n.p. [1910], 1910. Inscribed by Rodin to his model and lover Eve Fairfax. Photograph of Auguste Rodin seated by a marble sculpture and surrounded by framed pictures. The bottom right margin is inscribed by Rodin in ink: "Aux beaux gestes à Miss Eve Fairfax son dévoué admirateur." Image measures 215x145mm, mounted on original card measuring 245x175mm. Eve Fairfax (1871-1978: she died in York just before her 107th birthday) was Rodin's model between 1901 and 1909 and they remained close until 1914. Rodin sculpted her numerous times producing work such as the astounding "La Nature, Miss Eve Fairfax" portraying his model emerging from natural forms. For Rodin, truth to nature was a guiding principle and one which found expression in his artistic and personal relationship with Eve Fairfax whom he described as "a Diana and a satyr in one". 1972, 1972. Photo silkscreen on graph paper (900x735mm). Inscribed in pencil in the bottom margin "For Francesco - [Signed] Robert Mapplethorpe '73". An early work from an important stage in the development of Mapplethorpe's career. When he graduated from the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn in 1969, Mapplethorpe was making mixed-media collages using images torn from magazines. In 1971, he befriended John McKendry, curator of photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. McKendry allowed Mapplethorpe access to the Museum's photography archives and later that year gave him his first Polaroid camera. Mapplethorpe initially used this camera to make material for use in his assemblages but he quickly began making self-portraits and exploring the possibilities photography offered as a medium in its own right, particularly after he met Sam Wagstaff in 1972. [11], 84 engraved plates. 83 have three oblong rebus stories from the Bible and the final leaf title "Hieroglyphisches Beschluß Gedichte", [1]. With two exuberantly engraved title pages. The engraver is Hans Georg Bodenehr. Front pastedown has an inscription by an Anton Pruska (c1900) who was a sculptor and teacher. The first two leaves of part one have been coloured by hand. Text printed in red and black. Bound in half pigskin, paste paper covered boards. Edges coloured red. Covers rubbed and worn. Internally very good with some foxing and browning but overall a very good copy of Mattsperger's "Rebus" Bible intended to introduce children to Bible stories by telling them through pictures accompanied by short simple texts. Bound in a white spring binder with black card at the back and a transparent plastic cover on the front. In very good condition. A short note in "Box Office" magazine for July 30th 1979 reads: "Freezing Down will begin filming in November in Albany N.Y. as an Arthur Cohn production. Melvin Sokolsky is the director. The plot concerns a man's return to life after a cyrogenic suspension. Paul Mayersberg has written the screenplay based on the novel by Anders Bodelsen". There is, however, no trace of the film's having been made. Mayersberg's previous screenplays in the 1970s were Siddhartha and the cult science fiction film The Man who Fell to Earth, directed by Nicolas Roeg and starring David Bowie. On 10th January 1957 T.S.Eliot married Valerie Fletcher. The ceremony, at St Barnabas Church, Kensington took place at 6.15am "by special license", Eliot said, "from the Archbishop of Canterbury in order to evade the press". Eliot was famously shy, reserved and prickly so this somewhat cloak and dagger approach to his second marriage is unsurprising. Once the news was out, though, Eliot seemed to change and his last few years (he died in January 1965) were, everyone agreed, including Eliot himself, blissfully happy. With a single page introductory essay. A new book in immaculate condition. Using a Polaroid 680 SLR found in a charity shop these images, "small meditations on colour, beauty and time" capture the fragile, fleeting beauty of flowers. They are "a token of purity in an increasingly manipulatable pixellated world".

Chicago: St Luke Society 1902, 1902. First edition. 12mo (185x120mm). pp. 75. Two facsimile letters and five photographs. Original green boards, sympathetically rebacked, upper board printed in gold, lettering fading. Corners worn but overall a very good copy. The earliest known full length confession by a female addict. Annie Meyers, describes her descent from "well balanced Christian woman" to "a haggard and wretched physical and mental wreck". Her problems began with Birney's Catarrh Remedy and the book traces her numerous arrests, her progressive physical decline illustrated by photographs and her eventual recovery. "I believe that I am the only living person in the world to-day who ever took 200 grains (over 12 grams) in twenty-four hours and survived". While Meyers focuses her invective primarily on cold and headache remedies, 99% of which, she claims contain cocaine, it is likely that she would have used other medicines such as asthma and hay fever snuffs,… Read More

New York Undated (c. late 1990s, early 2000s), 2000. Spraypaint, acrylic and marker pen and stencil on an original New York subway map. Signed by Seen in black felt pen and numbered 142/500. Although numbered as a print, these NYC Subway Maps with added graffiti are original works as each has a different graffiti style. Image measures 810x570mm and the frame is 890x640mm. The map is a folding plan showing all the subways, buses, railroad and ferry links in NYC. It has been unfolded and is laid flat on a white card and framed. In excellent condition. In the 1970s, SEEN organised a crew for the sole purpose of getting his name in the New York subway system. The crew was titled U.A. (UNITED ARTISTS) also known as the UA boys. While other crews recruited as many as possible, the UNITED ARTISTS intentionally kept their number low. There were a total of 5 members SEEN, MAD, PJAY, DUSTER and SIN. Bookplate of Charles George Milnes Gaskell to front pastedown. This is a lovely copy in a beautiful binding. This is Moore's final, long-form poetic work. It is said to have been an amalgam of rabbinical and old folk tales, and describes three fallen angels who find themselves falling in love with human women. The moral essence of the poem is its focus on the moral decline of the soul.

James was the son of Alexander Morton, the founder of the eponymous textile and weaving firm. James trained with the family firm, becoming a partner in 1895. Through his friendship and professional relationship with Voysey expanded the firm's use of Arts and Crafts designs, selling the fabrics at Liberty and Morris and Co. The bookplate was commissioned from Voysey for James's marriage to Beatrice Fagan on 21 March 1901. The entwined thistle and shamrock are a symbol their Scottish and Irish heritage.
