Columbus, Ohio and New York, 1895. 8vo. 190 x 128 mm., [7 ½ x 5 inches]. 144 pp. Illustrated throughout with half-tone images and diagrams, 2 of which are folding. Original printed wrappers, a few stains but a sound and attractive copy. Specialty items include elevators, drive belts, conveyors, sprocket wheels and machinery for mining and mill factories. Established in Columbus in 1877, Jeffrey Manufacturing was instrumental in developing the mining and coal industries of eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. One of its most important products was the "Jeffrey Electric Locomotive" which moved on tracks inside mines and towed tons of rock and saved hours of labor and contributed to mine safety. Not cited in Romaine. This catalogue is one of the few original sources documenting mining equipment produced by the largest industrial plants in Ohio at the end of the nineteenth century.

Collection of 1440 lots, exclusively devoted to Americana, including New England local history, Western travel, a large collection of Californiana,  Mormonism, the Shakers, and Native Americans. The collection documents the anthropology, history, biography, and langue of the American Indian, with special reference to the interaction with settlers, treatises with the U. S. (9 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches). ii, 315, [1] pp.; [2], 308 pp. Late 19th century half vellum over decorated paper boards, edges rubbed but a sound, tight copy; a few of the text leaves are uniformly brown and some scattered foxing, mostly on the final leaves; marked throughout with pencil marks and notations, probably by Massimo Perlini. Only Edition. The collection of over 2700 lots was sold over 12 days in the summer of 1894. Maglioni's collection is considered one of the most important libraries built in Italy in the 19th century as it contains many of the earliest printed editions of the works of Dante, Boccaccio, Bembo, Boiardo, Ariosto and many other Italian and French writers working in the 15th- and 16th-centuries. (Biddeford): N.p., 1850. Broadside, 14" x 8," double column, signed in type by three selectmen with attestation by town clerk at end. Folded in quarters with several tiny holes (no loss), a number of creases, minor stains, one short marginal tear, etc., but overall quite sound. Comprised of 19 Articles proscribing certain types of behavior, the unique broadside specifies fines or other punishments for lawbreakers. Most interesting is Article 4: "No boy or other person shall be allowed to play at the game of bat and ball in the public streets of the village. Any person offending against this article shall forfeit and pay fifty cents for each offence." In addition to the obvious (like public drunkenness) these include: riding horses at a gallop in town (or more than a walk on the covered bridge); "any boy, or other person" who hangs onto a sleigh or carriage; anyone "causing dogs or any other animals to fight" in the streets; "Any person wantonly exposing himself [sic] naked in sight of any dwelling… Read More

Tall 8vo.  240 x 165 mm., [9 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches].   84, [2] pp.  Illustrated with 128 black and white photographs.  Bound in stiff manila wrappers with the title on the upper wrapper; splits to upper and lower wrappers at the joint, some paper wear to the spine; wrappers a bit fragile but a nice copy. The  text by Amedio Maiuri covers the history of the city of Pompeii, the impact of the destruction of the city by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and an account of the excavations of Pompeii that have taken place since the 18th century.  The beautifully produced photographs accompany the text and add greatly to the success of the book as a guide to the region.  The photographs were taken mostly by Giovanni Vetti, with a few by F. Alinari of Firenze and Anderson of Rome.   .

An unusual survival of this publishers subscription prospectus for a seven volume work, by Regius Professor Isidoro Bianchi, that collects his monographs from journals and other publications on all subjects, from the fine arts, education, economics, science, epigraphy, and antiquarian studies.  The work is unusual in that all his writings are cited with their first place of publication and date.  Subscriptions of 50 soldi of Milanese money are solicited for which subscribers will receive a free copy.  This prospectus was written by Bianchi's contemporary :Lorenzo Manini, a reformer himself and correspondent of Benjamin Franklin. Book label of Tammaro De Marinis.  Manni (1690-1778), a noted historian of printing and literature, was the son of a Florentine typesetter, whose interest in the history of printing was fostered by his familiarity with the printing trade.  His scholarship was recognized by his contemporaries, and he was elected to the Accademia della Crusca, the leading academy in Florence, and became the director of the Biblioteca Strozzi.  In addition to his numerous essays on printing and Florentine history, he was a serious scholar of the writing of Boccaccio and published his most important work, Istoria del Decamerone in 1742 to critical acclaim.  This rare essay on the first printer in Florence, was part of a phenomena taking place all over Italy by antiquarians searching through archives for documentation on the origins of printing in Italy.  It is an example of… Read More

Detroit, Mich., U.S.A.: Ideal Manufacturing Company, 1900. 8vo. 230 x 150 mm., (9 x 6 inches). 96 pp. Illustrated throughout. Original printed wrappers, stitched as issued; a few tears to the edges of wrappers and some toning of the paper stock, otherwise very good. The Ideal Manufacturing Company of Detroit was an old and well-know company which was found in 1887 and sold in 1912 to Colwell Lead Company of New York. This is one of its trade catalogues which featured the toilets and water cabinets which it manufactured. The catalogue also includes images and descriptions of its pipe fittings and traps. There is also a description and illustration of its Centrifugal Trap which increased the velocity of water flow through the pipes. Nice copy.

Eichelberger's account book contains a list of expenses as well as income relating to the Eichelberger farm. Entries are organized chronologically and list the item received or service performed as well as the price paid for the item or service. Eichelberger listed prices in both dollars and pounds. Typical expenses include the hiring of farm hands, food (often dried pork), county taxes, and the digging of a well. Eichelberger records far more income than expenses. He sold a number of items including wheat, apples, beef, rye, and animal fat. Eichelberger provided board to a widow by the name of Miller. Perhaps the most interesting sources of Eichelberger's income are the animals he sold. First American edition.  Sandor Marai was a ardent anti-facist who emigrated from Hungary to Italy and then to the United States just after World War II.  This novel, set in 18th century Italy, fictionarlizes an episode in Casanova's life after escaping from the Venetian prison.  Following his escape he reengages with the love of his life, who is now the wife of a nobleman from Bolzano.  "Brimming with the richness and psychological tension that made Embers (Marai's first novel), and international best seller, Casanova in Bolzano is further proof that Sandor Marai stands among the twentieth century's greatest literary voices.

Well illustrated history of Naples from its orgins to end of World War I.  Written in the form of a daily diary, Maurel's exploration of the people and monuments of the city carries the reader to nearly every street, piazza and building in Naples and provides historical context to metropolis on Mediterranean.

Orig. printed & pictorial wraps. Illustration of McCormick's Chicago factory complex on back wrap; image of the factory with a 2 x 1-inch tear with part of the image missing. "General Edition" and perhaps the first edition of a trade catalogue issued by McCormick. This is an unusual copy, for the front wrapper of the catalogue was boldly over printed in red ink with an advertisement for the H. M. Smith Company of Richmond, Va. The overprinting in red ink reads: "If you want a Reaper, or Threshing Machine for 1868, Write Before Buying to H.M. Smith & Co., Manufacturers of Agricultural Implements and Machinery, 153 Main Street, Richmond, Va. Catalogues, Price Lists and Circulars sent free to all Applicants."
