A carefully assembled and impressively detailed set of photos and bios of contemporary American and British actors, singers, and athletes, about 42 of whom are men, and 23 women. A few of their names include: Mittens Willett, Katie Putnam, Mollie Thompson, Maude Wilson, Hattie Delaro, Captain Jack Crawford, De Wolf Hopper, Frederick Barham Warde, William P. Davidge, Frank Daniels, and Matthew Kilroy. The theatre performers worked in a variety of styles, including vaudeville, opera, and burlesque. Toward the end of the book, the focus shifts to athletes, all of whom are men: many baseball players in the National League, as well as runners, rowers, and a bicyclist. The scrapbook's biographies are quite detailed, some spanning as long as six pages, with information presumably gathered from newspapers; likely also the source of the stars' portraits. Albuquerque: n.p., 1928. First edition. Very good plus.. Scarce regional literary magazine of the US Southwest, the first of just two issues released before its name change to PALO VERDE. Inaugural issue of this modernist literary journal, one of several to be founded by then-undergraduate Macleod, who along with associate editors H. Newton Oliphant and Robert Wayne Fall felt a "distinct need for a magazine which shall express simply, sincerely, and unaffectedly this Southwest of ours, the true Southwest of today." With poetry, brief prose pieces, and reviews by Paul Horgan, Haven McClure, Catherine Stuart, Letitia Eels, Matthew Pearce, Fritz Castlereigh, and others. 9'' x 6''. [New York], 1970. Very good +.. Circle of fifths with relative minor chords and bar of music drawn in black marker. MacLise manuscript material of any sort is uncommon. And these bold sketches deftly capture the essence of this former Velvet Underground drummer and avant garde music pioneer. Black marker on both sides of a paper napkin, 13'' x 6.5'' unfolded.

New York: Filmmaker's Cinematheque, 1965. First Edition. Very good.. Original placard for the multi-day, multimedia presentation of MacLise's "Rites of the Dreamweapon," staged during the first week of Jonas Mekas's New Cinema Festival (Expanded Cinema Festival). In November and December of 1965, Mekas presented an extensive series of multimedia productions including artists Angus MacLise, Jack Smith, and Nam June Paik, among others. It's possible, but not confirmed, that The Velvet Underground took part in the events (see "White Light/ White Heat: The Velvet Underground Day by Day," p. 58).

Paris: Dead Language [Press], 1959. First edition. Near fine.. A beautiful hand-colored copy of Angus MacLise's first publication, issued by his high school friend Piero Heliczer's Dead Language Press. Though perhaps best known as the first drummer for the Velvet Underground, Maclise is increasingly recognized for his later polygot artistic, poetic, and musical works - of which STRAIGHT FARTHEST BLOOD TOWARDS marks the start, and a fortuitous one. It was through this work that, according to Velvet Underground scholar Richie Unterberger, La Monte Young first became aware of MacLise, spotting a copy of SFBT at City Light Bookstore in 1961 - an event that led later that year to the pair performing together regularly, and later still to Young introducing MacLise to John Cale. Striking flyer for a Jan. 31st, 1966 reading by poet, actor, photographer and Warhol associate Gerard Malanga at Izzy Young's Folklore Center. Beautifully designed (almost certainly by Malanga himself) with two stills of Malanga and Debbie "High School Drop-Out" Caen taken from Andy Warhol's 1965 screentest of the pair (ST37), described on the flyer of a "'stillie' from Andy Warhol's BLACK TIE." Caen was Malanga's girlfrend at the time and the title subject of the poems, a series which remained unpublished until Malanga's NO RESPECT: NEW & SELECTED POEMS 1964-2000 (Black Sparrow).OCLC finds no copies, though Callie Angell locates one in a Warhol "time capsule" at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburg (#79). Undated, though the program notes mention Warhol's 25-hour "****" as having been recently released (it first screened in December 1967) and dates one quoted article as being from March 1968, which would place this event in early-mid 1968. Also mentioned is a Warhol film based on a "title created especially for Malanga by Tennessee Williams," "S & F," for which we have never seen another reference. A fascinating document, as it details Malanga's early relationship with Warhol, including how the two met, Malanga's early work as Warhol's assistant making silkscreen paintings, and Malanga's work with Warhol in triple-screen presentations of the "Screen Tests," wherein Malanga would read poetry as the Screen Tests were shown. At once humorous and heartfelt, this photographic work showcases surveys and portraits of Americans who happen to be named EDWARD WESTON, but bear no connection to the photographer of the same name. The other Edwards have occupations ranging from insurance agent to beekeeper, and their surveys offer a glimpse into their lives and those of their loved ones. Uncommon signed. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original staple-bound color illustrated wrappers. Three color and four black-and-white photographic illustrations, with seven images of completed questionnaires. [20] pages.
