Description:
London: Matthew Walbancke. Matthew Walbancke, and Henry Twyford, 1672 A very good copy in largely contemporary binding. In two parts with separate title pages dated 1647 and 1651 respectively. It is suggested that John Selden (1584-1654) is the true author of the work, which was then edited by Nathaniel Bacon - whose name is on the title to the Continuation. However, this is still a matter of argument. The work was produced originally as the Civil War came to its close and the Commonwealth was established and is written against the royal prerogative. A 'secret' or 'private' edition was produced in 1672 after the restoration of the monarchy. It is stated that 750 copies were produced and many were burnt or otherwise destroyed. The edition has the 2 works in one, is dated as for the 1647/51 edition and there are variants of it. Detailed study (Joseph A Dane, University of Chicago Press) suggests that the remnants of 1672 copies were put back together and sections reprinted later. This copy is clearly a… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh, London: A Constable and Company, and John Murray, 1806 A very good copy of Patrick Neill's description of his tour in Orkney and Shetland in probably contemporary half leather binding. Patrick Neill (1776-1851) was a printer who became particularly known for his 'interests' in botany and horticulture. He was a founding Member and first Secretary of the Wernerian Natural History Society. He visited Orkney and Shetland in 1804/5 and his account was initially published in parts through The Scots Magazine. He was appalled by the miserable conditions experienced by ordinary people on the islands and he started a lively debate on the issue. In the preface of the whole work, published 1806, he states 'it was almost impossible not to take some notice of the state of the inhabitants of the islands. The freedom of my remarks however, on the unfortunate condition of the common people in Shetland, has brought upon me the censure of some of the landholders, which they have, very unnecessarily vented in… Read More

Description:
London : GG and J Robinson, 1798 A good copy of the first volume of this important work, in more recent half leather binding, with 24 black and white plates. William Nicholson published the first part of his monthly Journal of Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and The Arts” in April 1797. This is the complete series for volume 1 running from April 1797 to March 1798. Each month consisting of a collection of papers submitted by various authors. In contrast to the Transactions of The Royal Society, which has many glittering names but also many poor contributions, all of these papers have scientific merit. The papers themselves are well presented and structured, with references, descriptions of experiments, analyses and reasoned results. As such it represents a style that we would associate today with a learned journal presenting research outcomes from our Universities and Research Organisations. Nicholson edited this journal from its inception up to its closure in 1814, though some reports claim it… Read More
