London: Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1825. 8vo, 213 x 127 mms., pp. 228, attractively bound in full straight-grain red morocco, with several borders in gilt on each cover, gilt ornaments at panel rectangles, with "Thomas Littledale Esq// Mayor of Liverpool/ 1826" in gilt in centre of panel on each cover, with binding border pattern repeated on inner covers, with silk end-papers and gilt ornaments at corners, spine richly gilt and all edges gilt; upper front joints very slightly cracked but a very good to fine copy. Thomas Littledale was Mayor of Liverpool, 1826 - 1827, like his father, also at one time Mayor of Liverpool, and both wealthy cotton brokers.

Drake's subjects here are the Cliffords of Craven (a Yorkshire family - Drake himself came from a distinguished Yorkshire family), Philip Sidney, Scottish authors, Ossian, and other literary topics.

A good copy with a contemporary ownership inscription in messy ink, "Tho: Lucas His Booke." Ingelo (1620/12 - 1683), though born in Bristol, attended Edinburgh University and received his first degree in 1641. He was incorporated at Cambridge in 1644, held a number of posts there, but left in left in 1646 or 1647 to be minister of All Saints, Bristol. Small 4to, 190 x 150 mms., pp. [3] 4 - 136, with separate title-page for Table of Difference, 2 blank leaves at beginning of text, contemporary limp calf; with annotations and scribbles on the blank leaves, annotations in many places, apparently made by an able seaman to accord with the ship that he was crewing, rather worn and affected by sea-water, but a very good example of a technical manual that was clearly used. The first edition of this work appears to have been published in 1676, and there were at least another 38 editions published in the 18th century.

Small quarto, 189 x 143 mms., pp. [xii]. 323 [324 blank, 325 - 335 index, 336 blank]; [xxiv], 307 [308 blank, 309 - 316 index], with second title-page at end of first part, recently rebound in attractive blind-panelled calf, red morocco label. A very good copy. "Bacon's greatest service to anti-Stuart causes came in the form of a political tract entitled An Historical Discourse of the Uniformity of the Government of England, which was probably written using notes collected by John Selden. Published in 1647 to justify the Long Parliament's war against Charles I, with a continuation appearing in 1651, the work has been referred to as 'the English Francogallia' (Burgess, 96). Contemporaries of various political leanings would have agreed. Nathaniel William Wraxall (1751 - 1831) was made a baronet in 1813, and the first edition of the above memoirs, published in 1815, sold out within a month; this second edition omits some details found in the first edition. The work was severely reviewed in most of the literary journals.

Small 4to, 200 x 142 mms., pp. 136, including half-title, old ownership notice loosely inserted, recently rebound in quarter calf, marbled boards, black leather label; text browned, with some water-staining in first 25 leaves, outer margins a bit worn. The first edition of this work appears to have been published in 1676, and there were at least another 38 editions published in the 18th century. Although ESTC records printings in 1758 and 1760, this printing with 1759 in the imprint does not appear.

Newcastle: Printed by Eneas Mackenzie, 129, Pilgrim Street, n. d. [c. 1832]. A broadside proposal for a new weekly newspaper, 250 x 170 mms., printed on one side only. A very good copy. The man named Eneas Mackenzie who printed this prospectus is Eneas Mackenzie Junior. His eponymous father was Eneas Mackenzie (1777-1832), famous and prolific topographical writer of Newcastle. As Alan Bell explains, this elder Eneas Mackenzie was "a strong radical, a secretary of the Northern Political Union, and the leading founder of the Newcastle Mechanics' Institute in 1824. His publications (all from Newcastle) contain much statistical information aimed at providing grounds for local self-improvement. This rare volume is comprised of engravings of the drawings of Parmigianino (Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola), Giulio Romano, Lodovico Carracci and others. The engravings were made by Nicholas Lanier (1588-1666), who was an eminent art collector and musician in seventeenth-century England. Malebranche (1638-1715) published this work in 1674 - 1675, and the last edition published in his lifetime, the sixth, provided the textual source for this edition. It was translated into English in 1694 by Thomas Taylor. Malebranche's work was read with interest and enthusiasm by 18th British century philosophers. FIRST EDITION of this abridgment. 8vo (in 4s), 173 x 108 mms., pp. [iii] iv - vii [vii Errata], 390, [3] 4 - 178, viii, [8 adverts], contemporary calf, red leather label; slight wear to joints and extremities, but a very good copy, with a ownership inscription on the recto of the front free end-paper that affirms a comment on the volume cited below: "Mary Weld/ Sales House Shepton Mallet Somersetshire/ This book belongs to the Monastery of the / Visitation of our Lady Sales House/ Shepton Mallet Somersetshire/ April 23d 1831." Mary Sales Weld was Mother Superior at the Monastery [sic] from 1810 to at least 1831. The Jesuit and Biblical scholar Joseph Reeve (1733–1820) wrote a number of ecclesiastical and theological works, but also turned out a rather good poem published in 1776, Ugbrooke Park. Liburnio (1474 - 1557) compiled and translated this collection and first published it in 1527, under the title Le Virtu et Ammaestramenti delli Savi Antiqui. Later, the work was issued under the title Elegantissime Sentenze et Aurei detti de diversi Eccellentissimiantiqui Savi . The aphorisms are translations from classic Greek and Latin authors. Copac locates copies in BL and Manchester. WorldCat does not list any north American locations for this edition.

Adela Florence Nicolson (1865­1904) published under the pseudonym Laurence Hope, though to friends and her husband she was "Violet." Stars of the Desert was Laurence Hope's second book of poetry, and was first published in 1903. It was the last book by Hope to appear before her death. Carrington/ Oct. 1830," the author's son; and with a book label on the front paste-down end-paper, also signed by H. E. Carrington. Carrington (1770 - 1830) was a school master for many years and contributed verses to various magazines and newspapers. ODNB records that "His poems are chiefly descriptive of the scenery and traditions of his native county and possess literary grace, but lack any striking individuality in matter or manner."
