The sole UK printing published by The Fleece Press in 1993. The BOOK is in Fine condition. Introduction by Allen Freer: 'John Nash the wood engraver' and 'Printer's Note and Aknowledgements' by Simon Lawrtence. One of only 12 special copies set in Monotype Caslon at the Whittington Press which were printed on Gampi Vellum and bound in full classic vellum by Smith Settle. There were also a standard hundred copies printed on Zerkall paper and bound in quarter vellum. The complete edition being 112 copies. Small folio. 12 X 8.75 ins. Gilt title on the spine. The 21 wood engravings printed from the wood include 7 of the artist's outstanding engravings from 'Poisonous Plants'. The engravings are markedly enhanced on having been printed on vellum. This volume was issued to mark the centenary of the birth of John Nash. A fine copy of this extremely scarce book in cream cloth covered drop-back-box lined with green paper by Smith Settle. The First UK printing published by The Architectural Press, London in c1936 (nd). The BOOK is in Very Good+ condition. The spiral binding is intact. Original photographic card covers are complete. Some light edge wear with rubbing and light creasing in places. There is a vertical rubbed area adjacent to the spine on the front cover (see image). Internally complete with some light age related markings in places. Free from inscriptions. Some illustrations by Paul Nash on peach paper and the 'Shell' advert by Edward Bawden is present to the rear. One of (if not) the scarcest of the 'Shell Guides' titles. The First UK printing published by by Martin Secker, London in 1931. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Light pushing at the spine ends with some light fading to the board edges and the spine. Some toning to the text-block with an area of staining confined to the upper text-block and not affecting the pages. Light offsetting and spotting to the prelims and rear blank endpaper. Free from inscriptions. A bookplate designed by Edmund Dulac for 'The Book Society' to the lower front pastedown which is clean. This is likely to be the first design for the Book Society before being replaced by the more commonly encountered Rex Whistler designed bookplate. Colour lithographic frontispiece and numerous monochrome plates. The book is in its original cloth backed boards with intact printed paper labels to the front board and spine. Some toning to the board edges and page edges with some offsetting to the front blank endpaper. No inscriptions or bookplates. Light pushing at the spine end with a few light age related markings to the cloth. Top-stain still vibrant . A hint of rubbing at the corner tips. Slight toning and spotting to the text-block. Mild offsetting to the end-papers with light toning to the page edges. Free from inscriptions. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition. Mild edge-wear with a little loss at the upper spine. Moderate toning to the edges and spine but the red lettering to the spine is just about legible. The price to the spine has been penned out with with a revised '3/6' price. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Nicolson's 5th major book, is a biography of the poet and novelist Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) published in the 'English Men of Letters Series'. Very scarce with such attributes.
