Oblong large 4to.; flexible slate board wrappers, cord-bound; 22 flexible boards with just over 100 tipped-in photographs, carbon-copied descriptive text tipped in, edges of wrappers a little frayed, about 4 photos with folds, otherwise in very good condition, with no photos removed, a few text leaves with folds. An extremely rare documentation of the humanitarian aid carried out by the international organization set up by the polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen. 'The Nansen Office was set up in 1930 in accordance with a League of Nations resolution to keep up the relief work that had been launched by Fridtjof Nansen, the first high commissioner for refugees. Early in the 1930s, the Office was busy in helping Armenians who had been driven out of Turkey, and it was an important driving force behind the drawing up of the League of Nations Refugee Convention. Later in the 1930s, the organization cared mainly for refugees located in Central and South-eastern Europe, France, Syria and China. The Office ran… Read More

Description:
London, [Jean M'Creery, Black Horse Court] for John Murray, 1817. 8vo. Uncut in the original publisher's paper-backed boards; pp. [iv], 151, [4, advertisements, dated March, 1817]; rebacked with new printed vertical label; preliminaries with light spotting, otherwise fine and with wide margins; provenance: early engraved armorial bookplate Edward Davenport inside front cover, 20th-century bookplate Cornelius Ver Heyden De Lancey on opposite fly-leaf. Very early printing of a successful, anonymously published pastiche of a memoir dictated by the captured ex-Emperor, clearly trying to show Napoleon in a liberal light, as the one who wanted to give the Revolution a legal and democratic foundation. It is now commonly accepted that the author was the Swiss agronom Lullin de Châteauvieux, a member of Mme. de Staël's salon; however, it might as well be a collective work inspired by the great salonnière. The book attempts to sanctify Napoleon as a liberal hero and therefore focuses on his early,… Read More

1971. London; W.H. Allen. 1971. 8vo. Original ivory paper-covered boards, boldly lettered in gilt to spine, preserved in pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [iv], 5-191; with full-page plates throughout in line by Robin Jacques; a very fresh clean copy in crisp, unclipped dustwrapper (£1.30) with no wear but some overall toning; scarce. First edition; the author's own copy which is inscribed by Beverly Nichols to the front free endpaper in ink, "Beverly Nichols, Personal Copy, March 1970". Interestingly the book was published in 1971, so it is not clear what the explanation is for the author predating it here, it might have been a simple mistake or reflect the date of the writing of the story. This work is more commonly found as a Knight Reader, issued at the end of the 1970s. The author, essayist, journalist and playwright John Beverley Nichols was a huge celebrity in his day and became a much-loved public figure who was probably best known for his writings about gardening. Original green cloth, decorated in red to upper and lower covers, and gilt to spine; pp. [4], ii, [2], 314, [2]; some fading to covers and minor wear, occasional foxing throughout and offset to endpapers, clear text and binding sound, a very good copy of a scarce book. First edition. Collected short stories from writer of supernatural horror Hume Nesbit. Nesbit was fond of ghoulish supernatural themes driving ordinary people to desperate (and usually tragic ends). The stories in this volume include "The Demon Spell," "A Face at the Window" and "The Odic Touch", amongst others. The eponymous Haunted Station is counted amongst his most popular stories, and is frequently reprinted in horror anthologies. Nesbit was also a keen artist (though he enjoyed less popular success in this field) and he provided the frontispiece for this volume, which depicts a haunted moonlit seascape from the story "An Ocean Dream". Warsaw, Gebethner and Wolff, [1929]. 8vo. Later red cloth, front wrapper with mounted lithograph in two colours mounted on upper board; pp. [viii], 55, 7 lithographic plates in two colours by the author; edges of mounted front wrapper with a few chips, not affecting illustration, text evenly a little browned, due to paper stock; a very good copy. This is the first edition of an excessively rare Polish avantgarde book production, the first book pulication by Marjan Niżyński (1910-1943), a poet, playwright, painter and graphic artist, whose experimental theatre production Dalmino was closed down by the censors in 1930 in Cracow. In 1943 he was run over by a German car. The poems in The Story of the Hunchback of Jaffa Port by the teenager is considered a masterpiece of haunting scenes depicted in very expressive language.
