Description:
Nantwich,: Joseph Naylor, , [c.1752].. 629 by 385mm (24.75 by 15.25 inches). Map border: 125 by 126mm; clock: 351 by 355mm; frame: 375 by 382mm; Widest: 629 by 385mm.. Separately published broadside engraved map. John Naylor was one of an important school of clock-makers based in Nantwich, Cheshire, active from about 1725. By about 1740 he had relocated to London, and seems to have died there in 1752. It seems likely that, in about 1726, he designed a series of engraved metal plates that could be used to make a clock face, such as the example in the British Museum. In parallel, he must have published a second, near identical clock face, to be used as a promotional broadsheet for the clock, or as an instructional guide to the uses of the clock. While virtually identical, the promotional version has engraved hands over the face of the clock, so it could not be used to make up a working clock face, as the owner would have the mechanical, rotating hands and the engraved hands of the print. As he was… Read More

The case split in both halves where hinge would have been, loss to exterior and minor loss to celestial gores. London,: Sold by John Bowles, Print & Map-Seller over against Stocks Market,, [c.1720].. Image: 345 by 465mm (13.5 by 18.25 inches). Sheet: 420 by 550mm (16.5 by 21.75 inches).. Engraved print. A view of the equestrian statue of Charles II, donated by Sir Robert Vyner. Sir Robert Vyner (1631-88) was a goldsmith and banker. He made the crown and orb for Charles II's coronation in 1661, after the original Crown Jewels had been lost while his father Charles I was fleeing the country. Vyner was made goldsmith to the King and knighted as a reward, and became Lord Mayor of London in 1674. In 1668 St Mary Woolchurch was demolished to make way for the construction of a new market, rebuilt as a fruit and vegetable market. The years after Vyner became Mayor, he erected the statue in the centre. The statue had in fact been bought from Europe as an unfinished statue of John Sobieski, King of Poland, trampling on a Turk. Vyner had the statue altered so that Sobieski's head was replaced by Charles's, and the… Read More

Nicholas Bion Nicholas Bion (1652-1733) was a French instrument maker, map publisher and author, who was active at the quai de l'Horloge a l'enseigne du Soleil, Paris. His most notable work was the 'Traité de la construction et des principaux usages des instrumens de mathématique' (1709), perhaps the most important book on the use of scientistic instruments of the eighteenth century; it was published in English in 1723 as 'The Construction and Principal Uses of Mathematical Instruments'. His expertise won him the position of engineer to the King, for whom he produced a range of instruments. Bion's success was made evident in his will, which left an estate worth an estimated 66,000 livres. Some time after his death, Bion's portrait was engraved by Nicolas de Larmessin, a French printmaker who specialised in portraits. The engraving… Read More

[Amsterdam],: H.J. Van Wouw,, 1631.. 1274 by 1405mm. (50.25 by 55.25 inches).. Engraved wall map on six sheets joined, eighteen inset views of the battle and siege works to left and right of the map. Large separately published six sheet map of the Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch during the Eighty Years War. Hostilities between the Habsburg Empire and the Dutch Republic resumed in 1621, following the ending of the Twelve Years' Truce. The Habsburgs tried to punish the rebellious Dutch Republic by cutting it off from its hinterland by a land blockade. The blockade caused an economic crisis for the Republic and it reacted by trying to harm Spain in its colonies. In 1628, one of the many schemes undertaken met with spectacular success when Admiral Piet Hein of the Dutch West India Company captured the Spanish treasure fleet. With this windfall from the Stadtholder Frederick Henry decided to break the Habsburg blockade by launching a campaign against 's-Hertogenbosch. 's-Hertogenbosch, also known as moerasdraak… Read More
