Among these, and captioned, are a farmhouse on Broadway and 8th Street; Kips Bay, showing a boy sailing a small craft with a farmhouse in the background; a house in Bloomingdale, the location of an early village now the Upper West Side along the river between 96th and 106th Streets; and a stately mansion surrounded by fields and less important buildings we would conjecture in or around Bloomingdale but captioned, surely incorrectly, the Battery. Paris: Paul Ollendorff, 1889. Limited First Edition. Half Decorated Morocco. Very Good. No. 4 of 8, and one of five on Japanese vellum. 8vo. 345 pp. An extraordinary copy illustrated at the beginning and end of each chapter with original watercolors by de Crauzat, who signed his illustrations. Together with a full page title watercolor, de Crauzat did 25 for this work. These illustrations capture perfectly the sentimental romance of the story itself, and each lays fair claim to being a miniature masterpiece. For an artist as accomplished as this de Crauzat to undertake such a project is truly unique, and thus this copy is special in the wider universe of published fiction literature. The binding, too, is an object of beauty with inlays of floral detail into the gilt spine decoration. The entire first year run of "The Port Folio", with an issue each week. Small folio, 32 by 26.5 cm. Blank leaf, [4], 416 pp. Lacking first leaf of the prospectus. Otherwise complete. Mounted on FFEP is the signature of Nathaniel Potter. We believe this would be Dr. Nathaniel Potter (1770-1843), a prominent doctor who proved the non-catagiousness of yellow fever. He held a number of prominent medical posts during his career, as well as being a longstanding Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland. Today he is probably best known, to the extent he is known, as the founder of the University of Maryland! Early American school atlas that depicts Texas as part of Mexico, California as an "unexplored region", Argentina as the United Provinces, Columbia as including Venezuela, Ethiopia as encompassing much of lower (Southern) Africa, and many other boundary and national curiosities. Maps are dated 1828 to 1830. Contents, listed on the front cover, include maps of the World, North America, the United States, New England, the Middle and Southern States, Ohio and Indiana, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa as well as two charts. 4to, 11.5 x 9.25 inches, 29.5 x 23.5 cm, with printing on one side of each leaf. Vellum binding has light soiling consisting of small spots and a touch of smudging. Leaves within lightly age toned by clean. Overall a lovely copy. Without the publisher's slipcase.

Limited edition of 200, of which this is number 172. viii, 32 pp of text, followed by 96 plates, 16 of which are mounted on and protected by tissue, upon which the caption is written. Plates are all on recto sides, with versos left blank, and each is folio sized, or 15.5 by 11.5 inches. Fine heavy stock handmade paper used. The book itself is bound in vellum or parchment and comes with cloth folio folder-style box or chemise which is sealed with ribbon ties. Everything about this book bespeaks a prestige or deluxe production by The Studio, and the care put into the book production likewise reflects the high esteem with which Rowlandson was held in the early twentieth century. Back when lectures were like today's performance art. Osborne would appear to have worked the church lecture circuit. Here, written in ink at the bottom, is scrawled that the performance was going to be at the Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 24th. Since there are records of Osborne touring in the early 1920s, we presume the date of this performance would have been 1923, in which year July 24th did fall on a Tuesday. Otherwise, 1917 would be our next bet. Osborne was the son of missionaries, and it would seem he would capitalize on his exposure to Indian culture to create this roadshow of his.
