John Murphy and Company, 1868. First Edition. Hardcover. Poor/No Jacket. Hardcover. 1868. Presumed first edition as no latter edition or publication year noted - revised second edition was published in 1870. First page is blank on recto, and has frontispiece portrait of George Calvert on recto. Followed by table of contents and introduction and pages enumerated to 252. Followed by eight pages of publisher's advertisements. Front and rear boards are both attached; the front more solidly and hinge is unbroken; rear hinge is separating but board still attached. Spine is gone. Edges are worn particularly the corners, with underlying boards exposed in spots. Maryland seal design stamped in blind to front and rear.

Covers the Vale of White Horse, The Downs, the Kennet Valley, and East Berkshire. Discusses geography, soils, economic condtions, farms (size, distribution, crops, etc), estate and farm management, labour, and the Agricultural Partnership. The latter refers to specific demands and restrictions imposed by the government to insure food production during World War One, which also informs discussion of labour in light of manpower shortage during the war.
