Description:
LONDON : George Bell & Sons, 1872 A nice set complete in 4 volumes with 132 hand coloured plates as called for. In green half leather bindings with gilt titles. The marbled boards are matched by the marbled endpapers. Teg. All the volumes have some rubbing to the leather principally at the edges and corners and along the joints. The spines have faded to a sage green colour. All the bindings are sound and tight. The contents have some light spotting in places but are otherwise very nice and clean with good quality plates. Vol I has some foxing to preliminaries and this extends to the frontispiece and title page and some of the blank pages at the end. The remaining contents are in nice clean condition and the plates are tissue guarded. The plate numbering changes from latin to arabic at times. Vol II has some foxing to preliminaries as in Vol I but is generally clean and bright otherwise. Vol III is without a tissue guard to the frontispiece but is clean and bright throughout. Vol IV has some spotting…

Description:
London: John Murray , 1879 A good copy of the 7th edition in the original decorative cloth binding with black and white frontispiece and numerous illustrations throughout. The binding is bright and clean. The spine is slightly darkened and there is wear to the top and bottom of the spine, together with edges and corners. Internally, the original endpapers are present - the front endpapers with a slight split beginning to appear at the joint. The contents are complete and in good to very good condition. There are some small edge tears - mostly to the top margin affecting the half title, frontispiece, title page and dedication. These have been repaired with archival paper tape. There is small loss to the side margin of page 31 where the book has been poorly opened - the text is not affected. Some top page corners have been turned over at some point. 32 pp publisher's catalogue dated September 1880 at the rear.

Description:
London: Richard Bentley, 1837 A fair copy of Vol II in the original publisher's boards with inscription at the fep dated August 11 1838. The writing is a bit difficult but it looks to be to John Beecroft (1790-1854) who became Acting Governor of Fernando Po in 1830. The inscription says 'John Beecroft a present from his friend McGregor Laird Esq'. The binding was designed to be temporary and has not worn well. Part of the spine with the title label is preserved inside the book. The boards are intact. The pastedown endpapers have what look like the remains of wax blobs stuck to them. Contents: frontispiece with loose guard; title; contents list pp iii-vii; text 1-351 - End of Mr Oldfield's Journal with one further plate; 353-411; half title to Appendix; text 415-420; vocabulary 421-447, End. Contents are very clean. Pages are untrimmed and there is some foxing, particularly at the page edges. The frontispiece is very spotty, but the second plate just has a couple of browned areas in the margin. Pages…

Description:
At the Sun over against St Dunstan's Church in Fleetstreet: Printed by William Wilson, for Abel Roper, 1648 A fair copy of an extremely scarce work. Thomas Overbury (1581-1613) is best known for the scandal surrounding his death by poisoning in the Tower, and the trial that followed it some 2 years later. He studied Law in 1598, was knighted in 1608 and was known as a writer and poet. His account of the arraignment and trial of Raleigh is assumed to be written as an eye-witness. Raleigh was tried in 1603 and convicted of treason. His sentence of death was commuted to imprisonment and he was later briefly released, before being imprisoned and retried in 1618. This trial reinstated his death sentence, albeit by less gruesome means. The book contains Overbury's account of the first trial; an account of the second trial (no author named); and Raleigh's letters to the King and to his wife before his death. The binding is more recent full panelled calf with title label to spine, matching a…

A fascinating read today, being an account of a mixture of mythical and real animals - including descriptions of dragons. There is an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown with the motto 'durum sed fortissimum' and the name 'Stones' to the top. The endpapers are also newer but the paper has been chosen to match the rest of the volume. Contents: title; dedication pp iii-v; to the reader pp vi-vii; directions to binder and errata 1p; list of subscribers ix-xxiii; text pt I pp 1-50; Pt II pp 51-166 with 7 plates; Part III pp 167-240; index 12 pp. With decorative head and tailpieces.
