Description:
Faber and Faber Limited, London, first edition, 1945. Cloth, tall 8vo,. x, 22 pp, 44 black-and-white plates. A well-illustrated study of this wonderful 12th century Bible. From the introduction: "During the twelfth century a series of magnificently large Bibles was produced in England, of which the Winchester Bible is the finest. Two others have claims to be reckoned with it, one now at Cambridge which was made for Bury St. Edmunds, and one probably made for Canterbury, of which the first volume is in the Lambeth Palace library. These Bibles were intended not for individual study but for ceremonial use, and their designers accordingly planned the decoration on a lavish scale, like that which was generally reserved for the service books used on the altars of the church. The designer of the Winchester Bible intended it to have a decorated initial letter, more or less elaborate, at the beginning of each book of the Bible. In a few instances these decorations were to consist of a design of… Read More

[Reprinted with minor alterations from the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science vol. 4 pp 50-70] From the text: "The earliest specific references to a library of the University at Cambridge are to be found in the wills (both proved in March 1416) of William Hunden and William Loring, the former bequeathing to it three volumes "to remain forever in the new library at Cambridge for the use of graduates and scholars in residence," and the latter all his books of civil law "to remain forever in the common library of the scholars of the University." There are, of course, earlier references to books in the possession of the university. Richard de Lyng, three times Chancellor of the University, who died in 1355, is included as the donor of a chest of books.. Booklabel of the bibliophile A R A Hobson on front inside… Read More

Loudmer, Paris, auction catalogue for the sale held on 20th February 1993. Cloth, 4to,. 313 pp, over 200 ills including numerous colour plates. 617 lots. This is the richly-illustrated and extensively annotated auction catalogue for the sale of the Fritsch collection of books on wine and wine-making. From a review by Nicolas Barker in The Book collector: "Within its 320pp, with over 200 illustrations in black and white and full colour, the catalogue illuminates the tastes and preoccupations of the bibliophile Kilian Fritsch who spent over thirty years assembling this library, with a perfectionist care for every detail of its binding and preservation. The catalogue is a worthy companion to G érard Oberlé's monumental Les Fastes de Bacchus & de Comus. There is a subject and author index, a list of bibliographies referred to and thirteen bibliographical items in the last section. The catalogue is organized in seventeen sections: the first four contain historical material from… Read More

Oak Knoll Press, New Castle, second revised and expanded edition, 2000. Cloth, 4to, 29 cm,. x, 894 pp. From the blurb: "This second edition of T. E. Lawrence, A Bibliography is a revised and expanded edition of the 1989 Besterman Medal winner, awarded by The Library Association for the best bibliography published in Great Britain each year. This new edition covers not only the canon of Lawrence's work, but as much of the literature about him, in all languages, times, and places, as has been identified to date. The steady flow of materials that led up to the first edition has continued unabated up to the present. Every effort has been made to bring all materials related to Lawrence together in one comprehensive source. Description:
Owl Books, Wigan, first edition, 1993. Laminated boards, gilt cover-title, 22 cm,. 127 pp, ills, facs. From the blurb: "As the eighteenth century progressed, provincial printing presses gradually challenged the London and Oxbridge monopoly. At first their trade was in commercial printing, in the provision of cheap popular literature, and sometimes in publishing a local news sheet. Manchester and Liverpool were early leaders in this movement, but between these two Warrington came to excel in the second half of the century. William Eyres was of the third generation of his family in this business; with his brother, still in their early 20s they launched a local newspaper, one of the earliest in Lancashire. This soon failed, but trade continued and probably owed much at this stage to their popular chap books. But then came the Warrington Academy, with its wealth of literary and academic talent; a thriving symbiosis soon developed. This author has argued that Warrington's academy was nothing… Read More

Whittington Press, Risbury, first edition, 1999. Limited edition of 415 copies, this being one of 375 of the ordinary edition. Quarter-buckram and decorated paper boards, 22 cm,. 84 pp, 36 wood-engravings by John O'Connor. From the publisher's description: "Since 1992, John O'Connor has contributed a monthly wood-engraving to Richard Ingrams' Oldie magazine, illustrating essays on English life and the countryside by Germaine Greer and Candida Lycett Green. This selection of thirty-six of the engravings forms a portrait of English landscape, buildings and people that is engagingly observed and recorded by John O'Connor. His sympathy with the English countryside and his knowledge of its architecture are evocatively demonstrated in these engravings. John O'Connor learned to engrave under Eric Ravilious and John Nash at the Royal College of Art in 1933, and his images of the English landscape and people have appeared almost without interruption since then. The Whittington Press, Andoversford, first edition, 1991. Limited edition of 350 copies (many of which were lost), signed by the author-illustrator. Paper-covered boards, imperial 8vo, 265 x 195 mm. 14 pp, ills. Written and illustrated by John O'Connor with eleven wood-engravings (seven in three colours and four in two colours). The text is an autobiographical essay describing a childhood meeting between the author and his twin brother Tom and the twin sisters who came to stay on the Belvoir Estate in Rutland. Although 350 copies of the book were printed, Butcher's bibliography of the Whittington Press discloses that "a considerable number were lost because of technical problems in printing the three-colour engravings", and though the complete book was issued as an accompaniment to the 105 quarter-leather copies of Matrix 11 (which also reproduced the text and seven of the engravings), it is uncommon as an independent item, Printed in black, the engravings in black with additional… Read More

From the blurb - "The British Museum holds one of the largest collections of bookplates in the world and is particularly rich in sixteenth-century ex-libris, which come mainly from the great bequests of A.W. Franks and M. Rosenheim. This catalogue, written in German, brings together and describes for the first time the outstanding sixteenth-century German and Austrian bookplates in the Museum, among which are works by Albrecht Dürer, Hans Burgkmair, Lukas Cranach and Jost Amman. Over 570 examples are discussed and reproduced, illustrating the different types of ex-libris, as well as later copies, reproductions and the nineteenth-century fashion for collecting bookplates. All works that entered the collection as ex-libris are covered, including printers’ marks, authors’ arms and title pages. Extensive indexes and a list of dated bookplates are also provided. It quickly became the fashion to disparage him, and the early Victorians chose to regard him as an ignorant though rather amusing pretender, a snob, a sycophant and a suitable object for sneers and humorous anecdote. The only substantial source of information is his own Reminiscences of a Literary Life published in 1836. For the last eleven years of his life we must make what we can of an extensive correspondence scattered throughout the collections of papers of a number of his better-known contemporaries.
