[London: Dobbs of London, 1830. Single sheet of stiff card, hand-cut, oblong oval (11 x 14 cm.), embossed with the publisher's name on the lower left. A superb late Georgian embossed paper pheasant with hand painted watercolor detailing. This beautiful embossed paper pheasant was produced plain in the 1820-30 period by Dobbs of London who were a firm of embossers, print publishers and "ornamental stationers to the King". The Regency period saw the introduction of the technique of embossing and it quickly became a very popular form of decoration. Dobbs were known for their use of embossed paper/card designs used in face screens, mourning cards, writing papers, visiting cards and envelopes, adapted to all the purposes of fashionable correspondence, drawing, writing, and wrapping papers etc. Painting and drawing were very popular pastimes in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Boston: B.B. Inc.; [Ben-Burk Distillers], 1934. Small folded pamphlet (11 x 6.5 cm.), 16 pages when folded. Printed in red, black and blue. FIRST EDITION. One of the very rare precursors to the famous Old Mr. Boston Bartender's Guide (1935). Following Repeal, Ben-Burk Distillers published the Guide, which was to become one of the iconic cocktail recipe books. Originally published as a promotional item for the Ben-Burk line of spirits distilled in Boston, the Guide became a staple of professional and home bars around the country. But prior to the first work titled Old Mr. Boston Guide, Ben-Burk published One Hundred Cocktails, Some Old -- Some New (1932) and One Hundred and Twenty Cocktails, Fizzes, Punches, Highballs, Toddies and Long Drinks (1934), both of which are very rare. n.p.: Raymond Oliver, 1950. Small folio, 16 unbound leaves, with letterpress text, or engraved illustration, "celebres au burin par Gautier-Constant". First and only edition. Number seventy-four of one hundred numbered copies printed. A guide to appropriate behaviors for those involved in active flirtation and seduction, from the chef/owner of Le Grand Vefour, one of the greatest of French restaurants of its day. The virtues include "tact", "discretion", "la pudeur", "la bonne humeur", "patience", and others. Most images are accompanied by a recipe by Oliver on a separate leaf, each with an appropriate wine suggestion. With two engraved bookplates of Raymond Oliver, both by Gautier-Constant, laid-in. In a folding paper folio wrapper, handsomely printed in red. With some age-toning and a small crease to the wrapper, otherwise near fine. Inscribed by Oliver to Samuel Rosenthal on the verso of the folio cover, and with the bookplate of Samuel and Marie-Louise Rosenthal to same. [OCLC locates no copies].

Paris: Galerie Jean Giraudoux, 1964. Quarto, unpaginated. Twenty original illustrations in red on ivory cloth pages. FIRST EDITION, limited to 800 copies, with this being number 64 of 770 unsigned copies. A collection of recipes by the chef of Le Grand Vefour, the first grand restaurant of Paris, which originally opened in 1784. The restaurant was revived with Oliver in charge in 1948, having been closed in 1905. It was awarded a third Michelin star in 1953. In this book, Oliver shares dishes he makes for his friends. A touch of very light foxing to edges of text block, otherwise fine, in ivory cloth, in very lightly soiled slipcase with chemise. With an additional suite of twelve lithographs on B.F.K. Rives, labelled in pencil, "Avantages Réservés aux membres de Tradition et Qualité"

The wrapper is stamped with the words, (my translation) "Have more sugar, I have no butter, I have plenty of meat." Pages a bit browned from the wartime paper, pink printed wrappers a bit edgeworn and faded, otherwise very good. Scarce.

New York: Rizolli International Publications, 1995. Large quarto (25 x 19.5 cm.), 184 pages. Illustrated. FIRST AMERICAN & FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION. Text in English. The book was originally published four years earlier as a French translation of Olney's original by Jean Forberger. A joyous exploration of the gran cru Burgundy from the Cote de Nuits, of which the critic Clive Coates said, "a yardstick with which to judge all other Burgundies." Neat ownership signature to front endpaper, otherwise fine in a fine dust jacket.

The author's first book, and a classic at that. The French Menu Cookbook was voted "Best Cookbook Ever" by The Observer Food Monthly. Richard Olney was one of the greatest of cookbook authors of the 20th century and a promoter of southern French food and wine. Publisher's gilt-titled brick red cloth, fine. The dust jacket is price-clipped and their is a tiny bit of edgewear, otherwise fine. Inscribed by the author on the title page, to Emilie Tolley, author of a number of excellent books on herbs and cooking, "For Emilie Tolley, in admiration, Richard Olney"

Internally very clean and sound; in publisher's brown cloth, brown and gilt-titled and decorated. Fine. Lacking the original publisher's box and dust jacket, this copy is otherwise very good, with only a bit of age toning to the edges of the beautifully illustrated gray cloth binding, printed in bland and gold. London: Andre Deutsch Limited, 1960. Octavo, 120 pages. Second impression. A nice little collection of recipes each using yogurt as an ingredient. Yogurt was becoming popularly recognized for its health benefits, The Turkish author brings her culture to bear on the recipes, but there are others from different cultures as well. Fine in a fine dust jacket.

FIRST EDITION; limited to 150 handset copies. "Driftwind Monograph Number Two, " reproducing a poem that first appeared in The Farmers' Museum, or Literary Gazette, in 1800. Vrest Orton was the founder of the Vermont Country Store and author of The American Cider Book and The Forgotten Art of Building A Good Fireplace. Original yellow, textured wrapper titled and ruled in black on front panel; some wear and very light soil to edges. Tiny tideline to bottom right corner of final leaf. Otherwise near fine.

A collection of recipes originally written for the pages of Harper's Bazaar. The book encourages a style of simple cookery, but contains more than a touch of luxury... just not extravagance. The recipes themselves, which include "reed birds in aspic", and "compote of pigeon", are written in full narrative, are an enjoyable read and quite detailed in their description. Very near fine in publisher's gilt-stamped, blue pebbled cloth. [Brown 2479; Axford, page 63; Bitting page, 351; Cagle 581].

Domestic advice and recipe book portrayed through a fictional story of a young married couple and their German servant. Originally published serially in Good Housekeeping magazine.
