1982. Charming engraving by Pixie O'Harris depicting a young girl engaging with an elf sprite and a koala in a tree. Numbered 71/75. Pixie O'Harris, whose real name was Rhona Olive Pratt, was an Australian artist and children's book illustrator. She was born on July 22, 1903, in Cardiff, Wales, and later immigrated to Australia. O'Harris became renowned for her vibrant and whimsical illustrations that brought many children's stories to life. Pixie O'Harris passed away on February 17, 1991, leaving behind a rich legacy of enchanting illustrations that continue to captivate young readers. Pixie O'Harris MBE (born Rhona Olive Harris; 15 October 1903 - 17 November 1991) was a Welsh-born Australian artist, newspaper, magazine and book illustrator, author, broadcaster, caricaturist and cartoonist, designer of book plates, sheet music covers and stationery, and children's hospital ward fairy-style mural painter. She became patron to Sydney's Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in 1977. O'Harris was born in Cardiff, Wales, and emigrated to Australia with her family in 1920. She studied at Julian Ashton's art school in Sydney, and began her career as a commercial artist. Although enthusiastically received on its release, this was to be the last of Outhwaite's major illustrated books: the onset of the Depression meant that few people could afford these luxurious books. FIRST EDITION AND RARE 'Mollie's Staircase' marked the beginning of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite's remarkable success in her international career as an illustrator. A collaborative effort between Ida and her mother Isobel, there is a "discernible air of growing self-assurance ... elves were evolving into her own distinctive creation and her dramatic use of silhouette was emerging as a major compositional device." A dramatic stylistic shift from her body of work up until this point, Ouhtwaite's "Bunch of Wild Flowers" follows in the tradition of Margaret Tarrant and Cicely Mary Baker's little books of poetry illustrated with "flower fairies." Small quarto, six tipped colour plates, line drawings; original decorated papered boards; endpapers foxed, head of spine a little browned, a fine copy nonetheless in a rubbed dust-jacket that has sustained some loss of the rear panel.

Each of the twelve songs composed by Bronnie Taylor and Edith Harrhy are accompanied by a suite of lovely, playful sketches by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Interestingly, it is not recorded as Outhwaite's work in Marcie Muir's comprehensive bibliography of Australian Children's Books 1774-1972.

With the success of the first three song books written and composed by Annie Rentoul and Georgette Peterson and illustrated by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, other editions were inevitable. This collection (the "Imperial Edition, No. 394"), brings together seventeen of the best-loved tunes including the favourites "A Little Aboriginee", "Baby Bear" and "Corroboree", in a smaller format for ease of use by children. Marcie Muir says these tunes, ‘made a lasting contribution to the life of Australian children. For many years, children were familiar with these songs, whether from learning them when being taught to play the piano, from singing them at kindergarten, or from familiarity with the books and drawings'. This ephemeral edition is quite scarce with a cover design by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Extraordinary piece of post-colonial Australian social history.
