Description:
n.p., 1968. Collection of five explicit gay-themed Stonewall-era cartoons presented as mock holiday cards and posters, all signed "Chic." "Chic o' Frisco" is listed as an author in the Online Archive of California's collection of San Francisco LGBT Business Ephemera, and is also mentioned by that name (as designer of a parade float) in the October 1970 issue of "Vector: A Voice for the Homosexual Community," the official publication of the Society for Individual Rights (SIR). Cards are reminiscent of vintage novelty kitsch-erotica for the heterosexual market, with an added subversive political edge; some drawings are self-consciously retro in style and repurpose patriotic/jingoistic iconography or ad-copy language for satirical or pornographic ends. Shares some visual sensibility with the work of Tom of Finland, whose style at the turn of the decade likewise traded on a pre-established vocabulary of masculine tropes. Rare and ephemeral. Five holiday cards and posters in original 12.5'' by 9.5''… Read More

Description:
Oakland, CA: The Links, Inc, 1971. Very good.. Original program for the 1971 cotillion ball hosted by the Oakland-Bay Area chapter of The Links, an African American women's organization. The program gives an overview of the cotillion and the organization more generally, including large-scale portraits of all the debutantes as well as their escorts, a schedule of the event, buffet menu and snapshots of the debutantes at rehearsal and other social functions, as well as information on the philanthropic activities of The Links. A large section of the program consists of well-wishes from contributors and supporters of The Links, giving a sense of the business community in the Bay Area at that time. An interesting look at middle class African American culture immediately following the civil rights era. 11'' x 8.5''. Original textured wrappers with rainbow design. 174 pages. Spine and extremities toned. Minor edge-wear and small touches of soil. Spine creased. Interior clean.

Description:
Bloomington, IN: Thomas Ockerse, 1970. First edition. Near fine overall.. Scarce and beautifully-produced collection of concrete and visual poetry. Thomas Ockerse is noted for his participation in Fluxus, mail art, concrete poetry, as well as graphic design, which he has taught for decades at RISD. From the late 1960s through the early 1970s, he created a series of similar works that investigated the line between avant garde linguistic experimentation (concrete poetry, etc.) and pure graphic design. And T.O.P., produced in 1970 while Ockerse was teaching at Indiana University, was one of the best embodiments of these interrogations. A boxed set of 50 works from 1967-70 divided into four groups, described on the artist's website as "poems of typographic structures in two and three dimensions; a set of poems as verbivisual drawings; a set of poems of found postage stamps with their cancellations, plus a series of collages using canceled postage stamps; and found postcards transformed into visual… Read More
