Description:
New York: Random House, 1950. First Edition. 241pp. Duodecimo [19.5 cm] Black cloth. A few small chips to the extremities of the jacket otherwise book and jacket better than very good. "In that game Jim Stanton, by profession a gambler, and by avocation a connoisseur of guns, won a store and quarter-section in Blackwater, which was little more than a wide place in the road waiting for the railroad to come and make it a town. On the stage going to Blackwater next day he met Charlotte Bisonette, the beautiful and spirited daughter of the head of a great cattle empire. Although it was not customary for a young girl of her position to talk to a gambler, she did open a conversation with Stanton and very subtly warned him for his own good to stay away from that region." - from the jacket.

Description:
Spokane: Arthur H. Clark Company, 2004. First Edition. 397pp. Octavo [24.5 cm] Blue cloth with the title silver stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine. Signed by the author and the series editor on the half-title, with the volume prospectus laid in. Volume 7 in the ambitious and well received 'Kingdom in the West' series. From 1846 to 1857 Mormons played a prominent and crucial role in shapingevents in California and the West. They were the first American settlers of San Francisco. Without them John Sutter would probably not have built his sawmill, and gold would not have been discovered in 1848. Mormons were present at the first gold discovery, made many of the initial 'Strikes,' and accumulated some of the first fortunes in the gold fields. They opened new routes between California and the Great Basin. Clark & Brunet 12.
