Description:
1911. London: Martin Secker, 1911. 4 pp undated ads. Original rose-orange cloth decorated in gilt, top edge of the pages stained orange. First Edition of this highly-collected, and quite scarce, collection of nine ghost stories. It includes what Algernon Blackwood cited as "the most horrible and beautiful ever written..." -- the lead-off novella "The Beckoning Fair One," which would be filmed in 1968 as the horror film "A Quiet Place in the Country." George Oliver Onions (1873-1961) dropped his first name to form his pen name; at the end of the Great War he legally dropped his last name, though he continued writing with the same pen name. Although Onions wrote in a variety of genres, it is for ghost stories, and especially for this volume, that collectors seek him out today. (In the author's prefatory Note, Onions observes "... it has been suggested that a definition should be given of the word that forms this volume's title. That word means 'contrary to the course of the Sun'.") This is a… Read more

Description:
1934. London: Hodder & Stoughton, (1934). Original light blue cloth, with dust jacket. First Edition. Although Baroness Orczy is best known for her 18 titles featuring Sir Percy Blakeney (aka the masked Scarlet Pimpernel) during the Reign of Terror in France, she wrote more than 18 other historical romances not featuring him -- of which this is one. Two years after this was published, as French-German tensions continued to tighten, "Spy of Napoleon" was filmed in England; it is about Napoleon the Third and his estranged, illegitimate daughter who becomes a spy for his court, starring Richard Barthelmess and Dolly Haas... The international tensions between the French and Prussian empires in the 1860's are depicted very clearly. This film features one of the best attempted assassination scenes of a major figure that I have ever seen, if not the best. It makes any film showcasing John Wilkes Booth shooting Abraham Lincoln look tame by comparison." [IMDB]. This is a near-fine copy (slight fading of… Read more

Description:
1908. London: Hutchinson & Co., 1908. 32 pp ads dated Autumn 1908. Original blue cloth. First Edition of "these further exciting incidents in the life of the Scarlet Pimpernel during the French Revolution after the King's death" -- the sequel to Baroness Orczy's THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL (play 1903, novel 1905) and I WILL REPAY (1906). Although this was the third book (of eighteen) published in this Reign-of-Terror series featuring Sir Percy Blakeney aka The Scarlet Pimpernel, it is the seventh in plot chronology. THE ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL has been adapted for the screen at least three times -- in 1919, in 1950 (as "The Fighting Pimpernel"), and in 1969. None of these is to be confused with Daffy Duck's memorable 1954 short titled "The Scarlet Pumpernickel." An oddity of this book is that in its own ad catalogue it is listed as THE ILLUSIVE PIMPERNEL. This is the Michael Sadleir copy, with his small oval bookplate on the front free endpaper; it is in fine… Read more

Description:
1928. His Memoirs, by his Confidential Clerk. London: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [1928]. Original light blue cloth. First Edition of this collection of twelve murder mysteries, featuring detective Patrick Mulligan (aka "Skin o' My Tooth"). In this volume, the Baroness is clearly trying the path blazed by Conan Doyle, as the cases are narrated not by the detective but by his "confidential clerk." This is a very good-plus copy (spine slightly darkened, with minor rubbing at the extremities). Although the American edition's dust jacket appears with some frequency, this English edition's is very scarce (and is not present here). Queen p. 83.

Description:
1909. Illustrated by H.M. Brock. London: Greening & Co., 1909. Original blue-grey cloth pictorially decorated in red, black and peach. First Edition of this loosely-connected collection of murder mysteries. The unnamed old man in the corner was the world's first "armchair detective," precursor to Nero Wolfe, who solved mysteries without ever leaving his corner. Included are eight illustrations by Brock, almost all of them showing the discovery of a body. The final case in the book reveals that the old man had more than a mere passing interest in at least some of the murder cases he solved so convincingly. Whenever there was a dearth of crime, he made sure that there were sufficient ingenious and carefully contrived deaths to keep his mental faculties engaged... [Quayle] During the Edwardian era, the Hungarian Baroness Orczy was by far the most important female detective fiction writer in England; she is today best known for her "Scarlet Pimpernel" tales. 1922. London: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [1922]. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition of this tale about Sir Percy Blakeney aka The Scarlet Pimpernel that takes place in 1794, during the Reign of Terror -- 14th among the 18 titles in plot chronology. Robespierre becomes paranoid about the Pimpernel and must have him destroyed. The beautiful Theresia is sent to seduce the elusive hero. And, just to make certain everything goes according to plan, Chauvelin has Marguerite kidnapped and imprisoned! Can Percy continue to disguise himself and get away with it? Can Robespierre maintain power when betrayal is stirring in every corner? Will Marguerite be rescued without suffering the death of her husband? Will Chauvelin ever learn to tie his cravat properly? Or will this be the end of the Scarlet Pimpernel? [Blakeney Manor] This copy is just about fine, with essentially no wear at all and only the slightest of soil -- lacking dust jacket, but this is a title that is almost… Read more
