Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, bound in modern semi stiff boards with cloth spine, 196 pp. Slight edgewear, toning and light foxing to the interior, normal aging; otherwise very good. This is a relatively scarce collection of Paine's pamphlets originally published between 1776-1783.The first essay actually appeared in the Pennsylvania Journal, and he used the pseudonym "Common Sense." There appear to be 14 numbered pamphlets, and a couple of unnumbered essays. While this collection appears complete, the numbers may not correspond to the original series. The classic Paine line "These are the times that try men's souls" is shown at the beginning of essay number two. Paine supported the American cause, and felt Britain did not have the right to invade the colonies. He believed in independence from Britain, and Washington even used Paine's words to boost morale among his troops.

Paine (1773-1811) was born Thomas Paine, the son of Robert Treat Paine Sr., statesman and signer of the Declaration of Independence.. In 1801, he changed his name to Robert Treat, and according to some, he did this to avoid confusion with his father. A poet and lawyer, he was he was a gifted writter, and never pulled his punches. At the age of 12 he attacked his own father in a scathing poem, which resulted in a lifelong division between the two. His poetry would gain considerable attention with his contemporaries, and he even became active in the Boston Theatre. The present title, his Harvard Phi Beta Kappa Poem of 1797, was considered by his friends as his best poem. While he had considerable popularity in his time, a lifestyle of excessive drinking and dissolute living took their toll. In ill health, he returned to his… Read More
