Description:
Setúbal, Plurijornal, 1991.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Large 8°, original illustrated wrappers. Illustrated by Rui Mesquita. As new. 83 pp., 6 full-page illustrations. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of these typically irreverent essays. The bohemian critic, polemicist, writer of fiction, and publisher Luiz [José Machado Gomes Guerreiro] Pacheco (Lisbon, 1925-Montijo, 2008), collaborated on A afixação proibida, the first Portuguese surrealist manifesto. He founded the publishing house Contraponto, which released works by many previously unpublished Portuguese writers (Herberto Helder, Natália Correia, Mário Cesariny de Vasconcelos, Vergílio Ferreira, António Maria Lisboa), and introduced Sade to the Portuguese readers.[ *** See Ana da Silva in Machado, ed., Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 358–9; also Jorge Colaço in Biblos, III, 1338–40; and Dicionário cronológico de autores portugueses, V, 426–8.

Description:
[Lisbon], Contraponto, [1961?].. FIRST EDITION. 4°, original beige printed self covers. Printed in blue ink throughout. Some browning in margins. Overall in good to very good condition. 31 pp. *** FIRST EDITION [?]. Confessions of a frustrated libertine and anti–hero. This [we think] original edition was seized by the P.I.D.E. Another edition limited to 500 copies, was printed and distributed clandestinely ca. 1969-1970 [we think]. A sixth edition appeared in 1992. There is also an edition of Braga, 2000. While Luiz Pacheco: 1 homem dividido por 2 and Contraponto state that the present edition was published in 1970, after the limited edition of 500 copies, we have our doubts. The typography of the present edition conforms fairly closely in typography and format to other works published by Contraponto from the late 1950s to the early 1960s (see, for example, Herberto Helder's O amor em visita, published by Contraponto in 1958). Moreover, 500 copies would actually have been a fairly large run for… Read More

Lisbon, Na Officina Real Deslandesiana, 1714.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, modern marbled wrappers. Woodcut vignette on title page (IHS monogram). Woodcut headpiece and initial on p. 3. Typographical headpieces and tailpieces. Woodcut tailpieces on pp. 40, 76. Very minor stains to title page and last few leaves, otherwise clean and crisp. Overall in very good condition. Old manuscript foliation ("53-90"). 76 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION, rare, of the author's first published work. It gives a detailed description of the lavish festivities held at Braga to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi in late May, 1714, when the inflow of gold from Minas Gerais was being felt in Portugal. On pages 6-37, the account gives extensive details of the elaborate and costly decorations of the Cathedral of Braga and its Capella do Senhor, and the display of the monstrance that held the Sacrament. Ponta Delgada, Typographia da Virgem Immaculada, 1870.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, original tan illustrated wrappers (slightly stained, small tear). A few small, light dampstains. In very good condition. Small white rectangular paper tag with serrated edges tipped on to lower inner corner of rear wrapper, with "cx/908" in later ink manuscript. (1 blank l.), 32 pp., (1 l.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of what appears to be the second year of an annual publication. It recounts the good works done by the Filhas de Maria in various localities on São Miguel Island in the Azores. There is more blunt honesty here than one would expect in a published report: e.g., under the heading Furnas is the comment, "Continuamos a não receber boas noticias das Filhas de Maria d'este Valle; e os córos alli estabelecidos pódem considerar-se completamente desorganisados" (p. 17). The text is signed in print at the end by Honorata Caetana Pacheco, President of the Filhas de Maria on the Island of São Miguel. ***… Read More
