Las Vegas: Nevada Publications, 1971. First Edition. Cloth. Very good +/very good. A very good plus presumed first edition. Scarce. Bottom left corner heavily bumped, otherwise fine. Brown cloth with deep brown title stamping on cover and spine. In a very good, unclipped dust jacket. Jacket is bumped and rubbed on bottom right corner, with shelfwear to crown and foot. 181 pages : illustrations, facsimiles, maps, portraits. Quarto. Las Vegas usually is considered as synonymous with lavish gambling and unabashed night life. These have been emphasized in magazine articles and books, while the town's varied and colorful past have been overlooked. Here is the first general history of early Las Vegas ever to be published. During the last century Las Vegas has passed through a metamorphosis from a mere Spanish Trail waterhole in a vast and lonely desert to a religious mission and finally a thriving ranch. After contemporary Las Vegas was founded in May 1905, it developed into a typical Western… Read More

New York: Random House, 1979. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Fine/near fine. A fine first edition, first printing in a near fine, unclipped dust jacket. Jacket showing minimum amount of wear. xxix, 718 pages, 16 unnumbered leaves of plates : illustrations ; maps; index. Octavo, he Boer War (1899-1902) looms in retrospect as Britain's Vietnam: a limited engagement that would "be over by Christmas," it turned into the longest, the bloodiest, "and the most humiliating war for Britain between 1815 and 1914." Powerful Britain could take no comfort, moreover, from its terminus, for even if the Boer guerrillas "lost the war, they won the peace." Thomas Pakenham, one of the auspiciously prolific Longfords (he is the brother of Antonia Fraser, above), has now given this epochal contest its first full-length treatment in nearly 70 years. In the course of his long narrative, he skillfully maps out the causes, the course and the aftereffects of the war. He examines the… Read More

A fine first edition (as new) in a very near fine dust jacket, jacket showing a minute tear top edge on back. xii, 292 pages, 4 unnumbered leaves of plates : illustrations, map ; 24 cm. Octavo. One of early America's main-traveled highways, the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road has long been in need of a historian to tell its fascinating story. In this eleventh volume of the American Trails Series, Parke Rouse, Jr., the author of several studies of colonial Virginia, chronicles the history of this great artery from its origins as the Appalachian Warriors' Path to its eclipse by railroads, turnpikes, and canals in the nineteenth century, and its revival (with a changed character) in the age of the automobile. Commencing in Philadelphia, the road ran west through Lancaster and York, thence down the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and on into the Carolina backcountry, terminating at Augusta, in South… Read More
