Vidal became a civil servant in India where he made important contributions to natural history. He collected bird and snake specimens, and had subspecies of quail and kingfisher named after him. First collected edition of Parry's three voyages in search of a North-West Passage, rarely found with the sixth volume, not intended initially but published a year later and uniformly. First edition, one of 500 copies printed. Here the Moscov artist Ivan Pavlov (1872-1951) evokes quiet corners of Old Moscow, looking back at the old city after the ravages of the Second World War. He is renowned for innovative wood-engraving and cutting techniques. Provenance: This copy was handed over to a Polish delegation in Moscow in 1949 (inscription on verso of title).

First thus, strictly the second edition, and the first to be issued with coloured plates. The majority of the first printing of this Peake classic was destroyed in a bombing raid during World War II. At the end of the war Peake reissued his pirate story in this superior edition with the drawings printed on coloured stock.

First editions illustrated by Peake: first issue of volume one, volume two was only published in one issue. These little books were published in English as teaching aids, therefore many sets are heavily used and annotated.

This is a superbly detailed account of the ornithology, and to a lesser extent, botany and geology of this region, described here as "A Russian Province of the North", heading north of Norway, and "Russian" Lapland. "It may be complained that the whole thing is far too birdy, and without doubt birds and their doings occupy the largest portion; but the study of bird-life was the first reason and object of the voyages." Immediately after his return, controversy broke out due to Frederick Cook's announcement, just 4 days before Peary's, of his own attainment of the Pole on 23rd September 1908. First edition, very rare, of these impressions ('seventeen breezy stories of six men in a boat' - inside flap) of life aboard a river patrol vessel, 1940-41. The Royal Naval Auxiliary Patrol operated vessels throughout the war, mainly on the busy eastern part of the River.

This is the official sequel to Peter Pan, which was commissioned to appear in 2006, the centenary of the first appearance of Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens (1906). Reportedly over 100 authors applied to write this sequel, the commission for which was awarded to Geraldine McCaughrean, previous winner of the Carnegie Medal, the Whitbread Children's Book Award (three times), the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, and the Blue Peter Book of the Year.

Dresden, Georg Conrad Walther, 1774. Small 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, spine ruled in gilt and with gilt-stamped lettering-piece; pp. xxiv, 456, title with engraved vignette incorporating portrait medallions of both the poet and Laura; light wear to extremities, even light toning, a very good copy of a scarce edition. Published 400 years after the celebrated poet's death, this collection was printed for students and lovers of Italian literature in Saxony. The publisher and printer Walther had good relations with the court of the elector Friedrich August II and was one of the most important German publishers of books in foreign languages, including many works of the French enlightement, which were distributed far into Eastern Central Europe.
