Description:
London, : George Willdey, , [c1710].. Engraved map with fine original hand-colour in outline, minor nicks to left and lower margin. A rare map of Ireland with a unique design. George Willdey (?1671-1737) was a flamboyant London shopkeeper and self-publicist. His principal business was as a toy-man and seller of luxury goods, jewellery, gold and silver trinkets, and china. However, he was perhaps the first mapseller to widen the appeal of maps from an intellectual elite to the general public; the interesting shape and 'fun facts' on the present example show his attempts to broaden their appeal. Willdey's map of Ireland was part of a series of separately issued maps showing countries across Europe, as well as London, Oxford and Cambridge. This series is most commonly attributed to Samuel Parker, on the grounds that the map of England and Wales bears his signature, and several other maps show his distinctive style. All of these maps are formatted in the same unique way, with the central image… Read More

London,: Printed for & Sold by Robert Sayer Map & Print Seller at the Golden Buck opposite Fetter Lane, Fleet Street,, 1751.. 365 by 565mm. (14.25 by 22.25 inches).. Engraved print. Westminster Bridge was designed by the Swiss architect Charles Labelye and completed in 1751. The project is notable for the first use of caissons, an invention which enables construction underwater. Westminster Bridge was the first bridge to be built nearer the city than Kingston for 600 years - it provoked the removal of the buildings on London Bridge and the construction of Blackfriars Bridge as the City tried to keep traffic in their domain. There is a description of the construction of the bridge and its cost - £389,500! - underneath the view. BL Maps K.Top.22.37.g.; RCIN 702539.

A fine German edition of Currier & Ives bird's-eye view of the city of New York from the south. The developed city stretches to the horizon, with many familiar buildings easily identifiable and with Central Park clearly delineated in the far distance. Both the East River and the Hudson filled with ship traffic, including images of the steamers Massachusetts, Providence, and City of New York. Perhaps the most surprising feature is the large view of the "Great East River Suspension Bridge" (i.e. the Brooklyn Bridge), in anticipation of its completion some seven years following the publication of this view. Currier and Ives were the most famous lithographic print publishers of the nineteenth century. Among their vast body of work are a number of topographical views; these are usually restricted to the large metropolises and especially New York, which was… Read More

The first state of a rare and charming map of Windsor showing Eton College. Although neglected by the early Hanoverian monarchs, Windsor Castle had become a popular tourist attraction by the early 1740s, thanks both to the castle's collection of curiosities and the care taken of Windsor Great Park by the Duke of Cumberland. There is an inset at the upper left corner showing the east prospect of the castle, before George III began a programme of renovation when he took the throne. The inset at the upper right shows the garden designed by Henry Wise during the reign of Anne, the last Stuart monarch. Description:
London,: Printed & sould by Robt. Walton at the Rose & Crowne at the West end of St. Paules,, [c1655].. 290 by 760mm (11.5 by 30 inches).. Engraved plan printed on two sheets joined, trimmed to neatline. The map is probably based upon a copy of the 'Ryther' map, now in the Bodleian Library, which has an extension - in pen and ink - westwards to Pall Mall and Lambeth House. The omission of the Stuart's royal coat-of-arms would suggest that the map was printed at some point in the 1650s. Howgego suggests a date of 1655, as the imprint upon the map is the same as present in Thomas Porter's 'New Book of Maps...' published in 1655. To the upper left is the long title, set within an elaborate title cartouche. In the title, the wish is expressed that the map "is a ready helpe or Guide to direct Countrey-men and Strangers to finde the nearest way from one place to another". To the right are the St George's Cross, the Harp of Ireland, and the Cross of St. Andrew. Further right, the City's arms are flanked by… Read More

The Edgware Road is a long straight road which runs from Oxford Street to St John's Wood, following the course of the old Roman road heading north out of London to the Middlesex village of Edgware and beyond. There were a number of inns built to serve travellers along the road, including the Red Lion which dated back to the fifteenth century. An example of the print in the Crace Collection bears the imprint of John Cary, and is dated 15 January 1789. John Rathbone (1750-1807) was a prolific painter of landscapes in oil and watercolour. Between 1785 and 1806 Rathbone exhibited 48 landscapes at the Royal Academy, and two at the Society of Artists. Maria Catharina Prestel (1747-94) was an engraver, specialising in aquatint. [Paris,: Chez Didot,, 1752].. 281 by 381mm. (11 by 15 inches).. Engraved plan. A plan of Nagasaki from a later edition of the Abbé Prévost's travel book, the 'Histoire Generale des Voyages'. Prévost's work was an expansion of Thomas Astley's 'Voyages and Travels' compiled by Astley from sources including John Atkins, Theodor de Bry and Jean-Baptiste Lavat. A London bookseller and printer, Astley wished to capitalise on the success of previous English travel compilations, such as those of Samuel Purchas and John Harris, and it was very popular. The first seven volumes of Astley's work were translated into French by the Abbé Antoine François Prévost (1697-1763), a colourful character who was in his youth variously a Jesuit novice, a soldier, and eventually a Benedictine priest, entering the order after the end of an ill-fated relationship. His restlessness caused his superiors in the order to obtain a lettre de cachet (an authorisation of arbitrary arrest) and he fled the country in 1728, and… Read More
