[2] p. l., 7-348pp. Contemporary brown calf, label on spine; rubbed at edges, but sound and attractive; paper browned but flexible throughout. Very good copy of the only edition of Dr. Parker's manual on agriculture and the industrial and useful arts. Many of the topics he covers include receipts and instructions for successful outcomes. In the first part of the book Parker focus's his attention on the preparation of the soil for a variety of food crops like rye, barley, buckwheat, and potatoes. He talks a great deal about insects and other forces that damage crops and offers solutions for protecting the crops until harvest time. In the section on the useful arts he spends nearly 40 pages on dye making and bleaching, an essential treatment for cloth manufacture. Small 4to.  212 x 148 mm., (8 ½ x 6 inches).  Engraved title-page, 31 leaves.  Illustrated with an engraved title, within an ornamental boarder designed and engraved by Gasparo Gaiani.  Bound in contemporary Italian mottled calf, spine tooled in gilt, red edges, red peppermint striped endpapers, beautifully preserved. Fine copy of the only edition of Parozzi's poems.  A rare collection of 26 love poems, some on true love, other on unrequited love, and other on the disappointed that come with the refusal of one's love.  Other poems discuss love in terms of flattery, sincerity, despair, jealousy, dreams of love, the seasons of love, happiness, thunderstorms as a metaphor for stormy love affairs, the gift of love, and sorrow that comes with the abandonment of love.  This appears to be Parozzi's only published collection of poems. New York: Published by the Author, 1834. 8vo. 190 x 120 mm., (7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches). viii, 9-179 pp. Original cloth boards, rebacked with cloth, remnants of original spine laid down. Light foxing throughout. With faults a good, sound copy. Second edition originally published in New York by H. Wallis in 1823 which included information on British practices. In the self-published edition of 1834 Partridge remove much of this material and focused more on the extraction of colors from wood, the chemistry of scouring and dyeing, and color preparation. The first 40 pages of the book describe in detail the methods and materials used in scouring raw wool and cotton to ensure that all oils and natural elements are removed and cleansed out. The next 100 pages are devoted to dyes. New York and Londong: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1897. 8vo.  210 x 140 mm., [8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches].   xxiv, 385 pp.  Illustrated with a frontispiece and 48 half tone photographs.  Original decorated publisher's cloth, some slight water damage to the upper cover. Account of Sicily at the turn of the 20th century, with a focus on the art, history,  and landscape of the Island, from the largest of cities to its hamlets and villages.    "To know Europe, one must know Italy.  To know Italy, one must be well versed in Sicilian history, archaelogy , art and literature.  Italy without Sicily leaves no image in the soul;  Sicily is the key to it all"  (Goethe).  Paton echoed Goethe's sentiments and produced a well illustrated guide to this ancient island. Although called a "revised edition", this 1897 edition appears to be the earliest listed in either OCLC or the British Library Catalogue.  Editions of this work were published into the 1920's.   .

London: John Lehmann, 1952. 8vo.  190 x 130 mm., [7 1/2 x 5 inches].  189 pp.  Publisher's cloth in blue pictorial dust jacket by John Minton.  Jacket extremities a bit rubbed, the whole rather foxed, especially the verso and rear panel, white portions of the spine showing toning, additional light foxing to textblock edges, else a Very Good, sound copy. Novel by the Italian author recounting a man's return to his native Piedmont in Italy after attempting to make his fortune in the United States.   Originally published under the title La Luna e i Falo it is considered his master work and appeared the year after his death. Pavese was an important Italian  translators making  English and American literature accessible to an Italian audience.  He translated Herman Melville, Gertrude Stein and William Faulkner, as well as Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens and James Joyce.  His edition of Moby Dick appeared in Italy in 1941.

London: Peter Owen, 1953. 8vo. 190 x 12o mm., [7 1/4 x 5 inches].  211 pp.  Publisher's cloth, dust jacket; jacket with some light abrasion and a bit of fading to the red; verso of the jacket shows some discoloration, otherwise a very good copy. First English edition.   Collection of Pavese's early short stories, written before he graduated to the novel form in the 1930's.  The stories are personal in nature and  reflect his politics, his imprisonment and exile, his failure in love, and the social condition in Italy during the Fascist period.  Pavese translated English and America short stories and essay in the literary journal La Cultura and became its editor in 1934.  .

The author of  "An Inquiry" was  Nicholas Hamilton, member of the Manuscript Department of the British Museum working under the direction of Sir Frederic Madden, Keeper of the Collection.  His analysis of the annotations and manuscript notes in the so-called Perkins Folio of Shakespeare's Works (1632), concluded they were forgeries of a modern date.  J. Originally published in 1842, Pedder's book went through numerous editions well into the 1860's. It was considered one of the standard survey books of the period and was especially desirable for the measurement of larger parcels of land in the American west and became a tool for as farmers and settlers who pushed past the Mississippi River.
