Among those cited are the Goldfield, Mascot, Red Fox, Bullfrog, Bonanza Mountain sites, and more in Colorado and Nevada. With a capital stock of half a million dollars, $1.00 per share, this parent company was run by three officers with the last name of 'Patrick." Includes information on the railroad facilities of Nevada, newspaper reviews of the company, and a photographic reproduction of "The Famous Combination Mine and Mill at Goldfield..." on the back-wrapper. A photograph of an African American chef or kitchen worker in New York, posed in a studio setting with a pair of what appear to be pheasants or perhaps some other fowl. He holds a knife in one hand which rests on a bird lying atop a pedestal, while holding a skinned bird in the other hand. An appealing trade photo of a skilled black man who likely worked at an upscale New York restaurant. CONDITION: Very good, matte rubbed with minor losses at corners.

Peach Springs is located on the Hualapai Reservation in Mohave County, on the historic Route 66 and former Atchison,Topeka & Santa Fe railroad line. CONDITION: Strong tonality, good condition, pencil title under image, slight warp to board, extremities bumped.

A rare and compelling broadsheet publication of a letter by Senator Timothy Pickering opposing President Thomas Jefferson's Embargo Act of 1807. Timothy Pickering (1745-1829) was a Massachusetts statesman and Federalist who served as the third U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents Washington and Adams. Here Pickering writes as a Senator from Massachusetts in response to Jefferson's 1807 Embargo Act in a letter to James Sullivan, Governor of Massachusetts. Through the Act, Jefferson had sought to respond to British and French molestation of U.S. merchant ships carrying cargo to warring European nations during the ongoing Napoleonic Wars. A lively travel diary kept over a span of thirteen months, documenting a Pennsylvania man's trips to Massachusetts, Maine, and Indiana. Born in Norridgewock, Maine, Dr. Elias Morse Pierce (1824-1911) practiced dentistry in Pennsylvania throughout much of his life. At the time of this journal he was living in Erie, although apparently not yet settled into his profession. Pierce's travels commence when he leaves on the steamer Niagara en route to Buffalo, NY on 24 Aug. 1848: "The company on board was mostly Southern Gents. and Ladys and had music and dancing-also a speech on the justice of slavery." [Lewiston, Maine, 1911.]. Image size: 8.25" x 4.25" plus margins. A wonderful image of an assembled group of Pythian Knights apparently taken in Lewiston, Maine perhaps at the 1911 Central Maine Pythian Jubilee. The celebration brought thousands of Pythian Knights and sisters to Maine's second largest city and was the first held apart from the Portland-area chapters. CONDITION: Very good, light edgewear and toning, two small holes punched in margins.

In a recent custom-made clamshell box, in half brown calf and brown cloth, with raised bands. First edition in English of Plutarch's Moralia. Although Plutarch is best known as a biographer, over half of his work consists of philosophical writings. In addition to his discussions of several classical schools, Plutarch writes on a wide variety of subjects, from marriage, the proper education of children, and how to tell a flatterer from a friend to the morality of meat-eating, the face of the moon, and the relative intelligences of land and sea animals. In this varied light, a more appropriate title might have been the one given to the first Latin translation ever printed: Apothegmata, originally from the Greek word "to speak out," was printed in Venice by Johannes Vindelinus de Spira in 1472. CONDITION: Good, old folds, a few small holes and a bit of toning along folds. A scarce and densely detailed map of the Pacific Electric Railway, initially published a year after Henry E. Huntington lost possession of the company and as it began to rapidly expand, becoming-only a decade later-the world's largest electric railway system. This revised issue of the map reflects the growth of the system to 1928. Boasting of "Comfort-Speed-Safety," the Pacific Electric Railway (fondly called the Red Cars) was a privately-owned mass transit system in Southern California, founded at the turn of the century and operating well into the second half of the 20th century.
