Minor toning to spine, light wear to head and tail; a clean, fine copy. This issue also contains mysteries by Anthony Gilbert, Gerald Kersh and Lawrence Treat. This copy is from the Ian Fleming Bibliographical Archive assembled by Jon Gilbert, with his pencilled notes and ownership to endpaper. A fine book in a near fine, price-clipped jacket, with a few small nicks to extremities. The Sign of the Fish is a study of the art of writing, and a critical analysis of the creative and artistic character, from the respected writer and social historian Peter Quennell. His subjects within include Dame Edith Sitwell, T.S. Eliot and Augustus John, and he was part of the 'Fleming circle' of eminent literary figures which included Cyril Connolly, Cecil Beaton, Noel Coward, Evelyn Waugh and Stephen Spender. With the illustrated dust-jacket priced at 16s to front flap. Small bookseller ticket to pasdeown, contents clean, no inscriptions, some spotting to edges of text block, jacket frayed at crown (taped to reverse) with some soiling to rear panel. Very good. The story had been half-written by "Q" [Quiller-Couch] and put aside. After his death in 1944 this tragic and fateful love story was developed and finished by Du Maurier.

Re-bound later in the twentieth century in tan quarter cloth with grey paper over boards and green titles to plain paper labels on spine and upper. With the original endpapers, repaired to hinges. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Repairs to chipped and torn endpapers. Heavily browned to edges and margins, otherwise clean internally. Spine label toned and lightly chipped. Very good. A novel collection of Fairy Tales proposed by the illustrator Kay Nielson, who wanted to illustrate fanciful tales from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but found little obvious material from the latter period.
