London: James and James, 1990. A Fine unmarked copy (apart from a small inscription written on the small erratum slip) with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 172 pages on glossy paper with 14 colour plates. The founder of Charterhouse was a successful entrepreneur who had flourished in the open and competitive society of Tudor England. Such robustness has characterised the school from its birth in 1611 - the year Thomas Sutton established a foundation for 40 scholars and 80 brethren - and its emergence as one of Britain's leading public schools. This account of the growth, the achievements, and the vicissitudes, of Charterhouse draws on thorough research. D4F. First. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Newton Abbot: David and Charles, 2002. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. A magnificent history of the men and women who carried out the smuggling trade, who were universally admired and everyone from poorest farmworker to wealthy landowner were involved in the trade or at least turned a blind eye. Shrewsbury: Swan Hill Press, 2005. A near Fine unmarked copy in pictorial laminated boards which has evidence of a bookplate removal (a small line of paper remaining to front endpaper). Based on a recent discovery of a treasure trove of original photographs by the late John Tarlton, the author has collated the collection into a fascinating and nostalgic tour of the British countryside during the first half of the 20th century. Thes previously unpublished photographs capture the peace and tranquility of country life and chronicle the lives of the rural community at that time. John Tarlton served in the RAF photographic unit and his early work was based in Essex but later he travelled extensively with his work regularly appearing in magazines such as Country Life and The Field. **** NOT EX LIB **** B2F.
