Description:
New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1864. First published in 1857, this history by George Payne Quackenbos (1826-1881) went to several editions. This is a very Good copy of a reprint from seven years later, part of a series of school primers in various subjects. Green cloth binding with black spine that is stamped nicely with gilt lettering. Clean text; 460 pages, plus a twenty-page addenda containing Delaration of Independence, Constitution, and a Chronological Record; followed by eight pages of publisher's adverts. The endpapers are slso ads, and another ad, for an English grammar, has been tipped-in. There are numerous illustrations, in both black-and-white and colour. The rear endpaper has a contemporary previous-owner signature. Scuffs and soiling, but still a sturdy volume, and fascinating due to its publication during the American Civil War.. Reprint Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Description:
San Francisco: A. Roman & Company, 1878. Reverend Doctor Hugh Quigley (1819-1883), from an Irish nationalist family in County Clare, eventually wound up in America ministering to the Chippewa Indians. His several books were witten from a pro-Catholic viewpoint. An interesting man, and this is an interesting work indeed. Quigley propounds an anti-Darwinian view of humanity. There is a chatty and gossipy biographical sketch of the author, and an eleven page list of subscriber names. Many illustrations. One only wishes that the good Doctor had paid for indexing! This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Green cloth binding with gilt lettering and an Irish harp (what else!). Clean text; 548 pages. The text is very supple and bright - very readable. Rubbing to the extremities; gutters are split but holding nicely. Modern bookplate on the front paste-down. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
