Description:
London: John Bennet, 1839. Hardcover. Very Good. London, John Bennet, 1839 [first thus]. Duodecimo, viii, [9]-124, 116 pages plus 80 engraved emblem plates and a frontispiece portrait of Francis Quarles. Early blind-decorated full calf and marbled papered boards slightly rubbed (the paper a little more heavily); one opening slightly affected by an acidic bookmark; occasional offsetting of the plates; an excellent copy. Francis Quarles (1592-1644), 'probably the most successful English poet of his age ... "Emblemes" (1635) [was] the work which secured Quarles's fame ... It is Quarles's historical achievement to have established in protestant England the dominant type of the Catholic baroque emblems representing the encounters of Amor Divinus or Divine Love and the Soul. These books were acceptable to moderate Catholics and protestants because they promoted the general tenets of the Christian life, not controversial doctrines' ('Dictionary of National Biography').

The gelatin silver photographs (image size 160 × 205 mm, or the reverse in three instances) are mounted on thick flush-cut cardboard; there are some chips and trifling imperfections around the edges, and two have slight surface imperfections in background areas; overall, they are in very good condition. The images cover a wide range of activities: two are at the quarry face; two show the light railway leading from the quarry; three are at or in the crushing plant; and two show the mine buildings surrounded by vineyards; workmen appear in all but two of them. Description:
First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Small quarto, 24 pages with 28 illustrations (mainly from photographs, with many of them depicting shipboard life). Overlapping pictorial wrappers a little creased; an excellent copy. A souvenir of the voyage of the Ninth Division back to Australia after the Allied victory in North Africa. RMS 'Queen Mary' left Suez on 25 January 1943; reaching Fremantle on 18 February, she departed for Sydney two days later, spent from 27 February to 22 March there, before returning to Fremantle on 26 March. She departed for the return voyage to the UK on 28 March 1943. There are no imprint details, but the professional look of the publication (especially with the large number of illustrations and the decent paper stock) suggest it was produced in Australia at the end of the voyage. The contents are the 'mixture as before' for this type of souvenir: fact and fiction, poetry, humour (hmmm!), and accounts of shipboard activities (mainly sport and concerts). The prize of one guinea… Read More
