Description:
1850. Very Good. Quetelet, Lambert Adolphe Jacques (1796-1874). A.L.s. to Charles Vincent Walker (1812-82). Brussels, July 14, 1850. 2pp. 207 x 132 mm. Pin-holes in upper margin, small inkstain in lower corner. Provenance: Latimer Clark. Discusses the construction of telegraph lines in Belgium, and some packages of books on electricity and other subjects that Quetelet was sending to Wheatstone and Faraday. Quetelet, an astronomer at the Brussels Royal Observatory, published several memoirs on atmospheric electricity, terrestrial magnetism, meteorology, and related subjects; however, he is best known as one of the founders of social science. His correspondent, Charles V. Walker, had been involved in telegraphy since the 1840s; in 1848 he sent the first submarine telegraph message from a ship connected by two miles of cable to London Bridge, and in 1876 he served as president of the Society of Telegraph Engineers and Electricians. Paris: Bachelier, 1835. Quetelet, Lambert Adolphe Jacques (1796-1874). Sur l'homme et le développement de ses facultés, ou essai de physique sociale . . . 2 volumes in 1, 8vo. [4], xii, 327; [4], viii, 327pp. 5 (of 6) plates; lacking Plate 1. Paris: Bachelier, 1835. 202 x 127 mm. Quarter morocco, marbled boards in period style. Minor foxing but very good apart from missing plate. First Edition of the founding work of modern statistics, which introduced the concept of the average man. "Quetelet's use of the average man was founded upon the belief that if there is no change in any underlying causal relationship—if there is a ‘persistence of causes'—then there will be a tendency for the average of large aggregates of even unhomogeneous data to be stable . . . Quetelet italicized this as a fundamental principle: ‘The greater the number of individuals observed, the more do individual peculiarities, whether physical or moral, become effaced, and allow the general facts to predominate, by which… Read More

Brussels & Paris: C. Muquardt; J. Baillière, 1871. Quetelet, Lambert Adolphe Jacques (1796-1874). Anthropométrie ou mesure des différentes facultés de l'homme. 8vo. [7], 6-479pp. 2 folding lithographed plates; wood-engraved text illustrations. Brussels: C. Muquardt; Paris: J. Minor foxing and toning but a good copy. First Edition, version with 1871 title-page. In this work and in his Physique sociale ou essai sur le developpement des facultés de l'homme (1869), Quetelet established the basis for mathematical study of anthropological data. "Quetelet showed that if a series of anthropological measurements of either physical or intellectual qualities were plotted on squared paper, allowing x to be the measurements and y to be their frequency, they formed a curve like that representing the expansion of the binomial, or like… Read More
