Description:
London: J. Williams, 1684. Leather. Good Only. 6.5" by 4". Francis Quarles. A wonderfully illustrated example of this book of emblems by Francis Quarles. Francis Quarles (8 May 1592 – 8 September 1644) was an English poet most famous for this work. He was entered at Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1608, and subsequently at Lincoln's Inn. Quarles was made cupbearer to the Princess Elizabeth, in 1613, remaining abroad for some years; and before 1629 he was appointed secretary to Ussher, the primate of Ireland. About 1633 he returned to England, and spent the next two years in the preparation of his Emblems, which was originally published in 1635. With an engraved title page and copious amusing, puzzling and beautiful illustrations throughout. Emblem books are a category of mainly didactic illustrated book printed in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, typically containing a number of emblematic images with explanatory text. Scholars differ on the key question of whether the actual… Read More

London: T. D. for John Williams, 1675. Leather. Good. 6" by 3.5". None. A very scarce poetical work by the Royalist Francis Quarles, containing scathing poems that attack the Puritans and Papists. A very scarce work.A poetry collection of epigrams, meditations, and observations. In 'Divine Fancies' Quarles established his viewpoint as an Anglican and royalist, clearly stating but religious and political stances against the puritans and papists, who he vigorously attacks in this work. This work was first published in 1632, written in the budding build up to the English Civil War, with the parliamentarians and Puritans gaining power. This seventh edition was published after the Restoration, when Charles II was on the throne, and after the death of Quarles in 1644. Quarles never lived to see the Restoration.Quarles showcases the growing issues in the country at this time through his verse and observations, providing a fascinating insight into mid-seventeenth century England. Written by Francis Quarles,… Read More
