Chicago: R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company, 1918. Hardcover. 16mo. Green cloth, gilt. xxii, 186pp. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece. Near fine. Tight, attractive copy of this early "Lakeside Classic," the annual keepsake presented by this printer/publisher to friends and clients starting in 1903. This volume contains Morris Birkbeck's "Observations of an English Immigrant in 1817," William Newnham Blake's "A Tour in Southern Illinois in 1822" and Henry R. Schoolcraft's "A Journey Up the Illinois River in 1821." A superb, bright and lovely copy. Early Lakesides from their "green period" -- the first thirty years -- have become quite scarce in recent years.

New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1874. Steel engraving. 4to (12.¼" X 9"). Very good. Faint bit of age toning at edges. A sharp, attractive heavy stock steel engraving from the first edition (1872-74) of editor William Cullen Bryant's landmark "Picturesque America; Or, The Land We Live In. A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes, Waterfalls, Shores, Canyons, Valleys, Cities, and Other Picturesque Features of Our Country," a hefty two-volume study of America's scenery in words and fine steel engraving considered highly influential to American tourism. "Quebec" was engraved by one of this work's most notable engravers, Robert Hinshelwood (b. 1812), a Scottish-born artist remembered for his landscapes, based on a painting by noted landscape artist and illustrator John Douglas Woodward (1846-1924). This delightful cityscape shows a rural foreground, the Saint Lawrence River laden with rowboats, steamboats and sailboats of every size in the middle ground and a large city loming up on…

Fiction fans remember this Iowa novelist (actually a lawyer and bootlegger prosecutor) for exciting depictions of pioneer life in books such as "Vandemark's Folly" (1921) and "The Hawkeye" (1923), while steamboating aficionados remember him for the classic "Mississippi Steamboatin'." TNS, 1p, 8¼" X 11", Berkeley Springs, WV, 1924 November 21. Addressed to George H. Lorimer (1867-1937), the influential "Saturday Evening Post" editor. Very good. Mounting traces on verso. Asks Lorimer's help in tracking down a friend's address, concluding with, "I am making good progress with the autobiography."
