Description:
1872. Heavy Morocco. Very Good. 4to. 31 by 24 cm. The watercolors or gouaches are mounted onto the heavy card leaves of the album. Each measures 12 by 9 cm. They are very fully, richly painted. Depicted is the woman playing croquet, holding a fan, dancing ballet, ice skating, walking, balancing on a high wire, at prayer, in riding habit, playing a guitar, mountain climbing, at the theater, punting, wading in water, shooting a bow, etc. In some of the paintings she is merely modeling an extravagant costume. While much of the dress was undoubtedly the latest cosmopolitan fashion coming out of Paris, there is enough that has a specifically Spanish flavor, and this combined with explicit Catholic references and in keeping with her facial features, leads one to conclude with confidence that she was Hispanic, and in fact, probably South American. The artwork has a naive quality, but this might have been also cultivated by the artist, who was at the same time unstinting in rendering fine details in… Read More

Description:
Belle Isle en Mer, 1754, 1840. Full Morocco. Near Fine. Manuscript local history of Breton island written with a beautiful cursive hand, a beautiful watercolor of a shore panorama and a highly decorative title page. 4to. 25.5 by 19 cm. 650 pp. (325 leaves.) The watercolor is actually dated 1840, and this suggests strongly to us that the manuscript text was of this later date, and probably a copy of an earlier manuscript, especially since the ruling on the pages and the style of cursive is entirely consistent with that of the mid-19th century. Bound by Bauzonnet Trautz in full brown morocco, tooled turn-ins. Belle-Isle is in the Department of Morbihan, a part of ancient Brittany. It was the last stronghold of about 7,000 Royalists in 1795. With several small ports, the island's economy was heavily reliant on pichard fishing. In more recent times it has become predictably a favored location for second homes. The history begins with the formation of the island, its place in antiquity and… Read More

London: J. Bumpus, 1819. Very Good. 8vo. xvii, 384 pp. With nine of ten hand colored aquatint plates. Since there is no evidence in the form of offsetting of the missing plate, it may never have been bound into this particular copy. Notwithstanding its omission, the scarcity of this work of English caricature and illustration from Regency England make this a desirable copy. Prideaux 348. Small repair to the top of one plate, a tiny chip on another, and and a few text pages with a repair. Heavy offsetting onto text pages of plates. Otherwise internally quite clean. Description:
1916-1918. Hardcover. Fabric pastedown on cloth. . Very Good. Oblong, 13.5 by 20 cm. 33 leaves, drawings only on rectos, with two per page on 25 leaves, and eight full page cartoons. Cartoon captions are in French, and the venom is directed at Kaiser Guillaume (Wilhelm II), the Crown Prince, Bethmann-Hollweg, his generals and admirals such as von Tirpitz, von Bissing, von Zeppelin, Turkey and other Central Powers. The caricatures are masterful miniatures. Rabet captures the essence of his target's facial features with a panache of the accomplished caricaturists, and the illustrations truly stand on their own, even without the captioned short dialogues accompanying the drawings. We don't have information about the artist, M. Rabet, but we can comfortably appraise the artwork as professional level. Light wear.

Paris: Librairie Garnier Freres, 1928. Hardcover. Very Good. Rabier, Benjamin. Folio. Unpaginated. Tale of goose Gedeon and adventures in Africa. Rabier's color illustrations would seem to prefigure the anthropomorphic charm and acuity of Warner Brothers' Loony Toons. Text is minimal and not critical to enjoyment of the cartoon-like format, with some frames half and even full page, which measures 12.5 by 9.5 inches. Some shelfwear to boards, with moderate soilage and some minor losses to paper on board along edges. Heavy stock paper with toning but clean otherwise. Tight binding. A very good copy overall.

Description:
Paris: Firmin-Didot et Cie., 1888. 1st Edition. Half Morocco . Fine. Elephant Folio - over 15. This is the much less common folio version of this work, with each of 6 volumes measuring 16.5 by 12.5 inches, or 42 by 32 cm. With 500 plates, 300 using color chromolithography. This copy is about as as good as it gets. Modern half morocco over green boards is pristine. Five thick raised bands on each spine, with gilt lettered labels. Traditional Victorian endpapers. All bindings are tight. Interiors are about as clean as can be, notwithstanding the most occasional and lightest of speck. This is one of the most elaborate and detailed costume books ever produced, if not the single most ambitious such work. It is still an invaluable reference, but it functions fabulously well simply as visual entertainment, and the plates contained herein have found their ways to many a print shop where they have been framed and later hung on walls as decoration. As not uncommon among costume books, Racinet also… Read More

Description:
London: The Fine Art Society, 1916. Half Decorated Cloth. Marbled Paper.. Fine. A near flawless copy of a spectacular collection of wartime illustration. Large folio, 46 by 36 cm. xxx pp, followed by the illustraitons. Raemaeker was a Dutch painter and cartoonist especially remembered for his trenchant anti-German cartoons drawn during the First World War. This volume is one of three of his collected works; it nonetheless stands on its own very well. Each of the mounted plates has a long caption and description on the facing page, which is also the verso of the preceding plate leaf (excepting the frontis plate). The descriptions are arranged in chronological order and thus serve well as a loose, albeit highly biased, account of the war. Most of the plates have color, with a few that are lithos of chalk or ink drawings.

Description:
1909. Quarter Calf. Very Good. Folio, 48 by 33 cm. 39 watercolors and chalk drawings mostly of furniture and decor items but also a smattering of decorative book bindings, architectural details, flowers, animals, landscapes, etc. Particularly nice are the studies of furniture, screens and stained glass windows. Ragot was a student at the Lycee de Laval at the time. The work is generally quite precise, and he satisfyingly captured the prevailing Art Nouveau aesthetic that was soon to recede. All the leaves are now loose from their binding. Many of them are stamped in the corner with the school name and information about when the work was done, how long it took to do, and for what class it was assigned. The folio is quarter calf and heavily worn. The artworks are mostly on heavy card paper and are generally clean.

Glasgow: A. Foulis, 1788. First Illustrated Edition. Half Morocco, Marbled Boards. Near Fine. 4to. 30 by 23 cm. iv, x, ii, 111, iii, 17, i, 18 pp. Hand-colored portrait frontis of Ramsay plus twelve hand-colored aquatint plates. Ramsay's enormously successful play dates to 1725. It celebrates rural life, particularly that in Scotland of the day. The principal character of Sir William Worthy is supposedly based on the pretenderJames Stuart. The play employs light Scottish dialect throughout. This edition of the play has an useful glossary of Scottish words, and also eighteen engraved pages of songs (with musical notation) inspired by the play. The light caricature illustrations by David Allan, which are original to this edition, perfectly complement the material, and the coloring, although possibly not arranged for by the publisher, captures the rich lushness of the countryside and its picturesque country folk. Some rubbing to the boards. Light dustsoiling within, and occasional light… Read More

Description:
Half Morocco. Pebbled cloth on boards. . Very Good. Folio, 38 by 28 cm. 96 pages of original botanical or floral artwork mounted onto the pages of the album. Most pages are devoted to a single subject, which is generally a one flower or plant, with multiple depictions of the plant. Thus we are shown the flower, stem, and/or leaves from various angles, or we might be given various examples of any of these plant parts. Clearly the purpose was to inspire the designer as well as provide a handy reference for verisimilitude as he was working on an actual ornament design. It is probable that all the artwork was done by one hand, as there is a coherence in the execution and style. We think the artist is likely to have been a Wilbert Rattray, whose card is mounted onto the corner of the FFEP, but of course we can't be sure of this, and we assume that Mr. Rattray was employed by Brown Brothers of Glasgow and Edinburgh, whose name and address is stamped several times in the album. Brown Brothers was clearly a… Read More
