Generally a nice set of this 1982 reprint in original wrappers. The spine is Volume I is a bit creased; UK bookseller ticket inside the front cover; Volume II has some creasing to the wrappers and several preliminary pages; Volume III is quite bright. All are clean but for some early bookseller notations in pencil.

Front cover is heavily silverfished as well as the rear cover to much lesser degree; previous owner name in ink on the front free endpaper; penciled address on the title page and a very few pencil notes to the text; a couple of pages with offsetting from newspaper clippings. No publication information but OCLC speculates on a 1936 date which is likely about right given some mid-1930s dates in the text. Uncommon in any condition.

Spine ends frayed with a 1" tear to the cloth at the top of the front joint; corners are frayed; binding is a bit loose, but holding; contents clean. Reeder, former governor of the Kansas Territory, attacks Buchanan and pro-slavery Democrats in a letter headed New York City, September 18, 1856 and addressed to the editors of the Evening Post. The Buchanan testimony concerns Fremont's military command in California during the Mexican War. OCLC locates eight copies in institutions (OCLC: 37964259).

Generally toned; one page corner chipped without touching text. "John Henry, Canadian adventurer in British employ, met with some success in fomenting New England dissatisfaction towards the war" (Howes S-262), the British plan being to exploit New England's disaffection during the War of 1812 and cause it to unite with Canada. [Richmond, 1864]. Unbound. Very Good binding. Octavo. 2 pp. Confederate imprint. Caption title: "House of Representatives, Nov. 18, 1864.--Read first and second times, and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. November 22, 1864.--Reported back favorably, and ordered to be printed. [By Mr. Russell.]" Single leaf. Early "Rebel Archives, War Department" rubber stamp on the top of the recto; expected toning to the leaf, but a clear, bright print. An interesting bill that outlines what constitutes "conspiracy" against the Confederate States and the punishment for those found guilty of this "high crime." Indeed a broad scope that would range from "subvert, overturn, or destroy, by force, the Government of the Confederate States" to "annoy the soldiers in the military service." Conviction would be punished by a fine up to $5,000 and imprisonment "with or without labor" up to 5 years. A nice copy of an uncommon collection. This copy copy inscribed to D. H. Lawrence scholar, Keith Cushman. Hartzell 320.
