ix+59 pages with maps, tables, figures and cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Missouri Archaeological Society Research Series number 12. First edition. During the 1969 field season a small, multi-component campsite was found in the proposed Meramec Park Reservoir Kimberlin Period of the local Woodland tradition (about AD 950-1050). The Kimberlin Site was especially important in that while its size, placement and surface debris are similar to other sites of the same time period, it is unique in the excellent preservation of floral and faunal ecofacts and in the amount of data found in situ. Since the site presented an opportunity to gain important insights into the nature or least one o the human populations occupying the reservoir area, excavation was continued in 1970. First edition. This paper examines the proposition that availability of animal protein limits the size, density, and permanence of settlements of the aboriginal societies of the Amazon Basin. Previous discussion have focused mainly on agricultural potential. Evidence is presented from ethnography and ecology suggesting that fish and game are scarce, particularly away from major rivers. Nine relatively unacculturated societies have relatively low but probably adequate per capita intake of animal protein. the effects which this limitation may have on Amazonian culture are discussed. Description:
727-750 pages with tables and cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 21, Number 6 complete issue. First edition. In a recent discussion of prehistoric developments in coastal Peru, Osborn has drawn attention to the "uniqueness" of the Peruvian littoral in providing large amounts of nutrients to support locally high population densities and a base for the development of Peruvian civilization. This bounteous resource base is contrasted with that of other maritime environments, which are seen to be relatively unproductive. The present article takes issue with that viewpoint, arguing instead that the maritime and coastal environments occupied by humans are generally highly productive and have uniformly supported relatively dense populations of hunter-gatherers. Description:
595-617 pages with charts, tables, graphs, figures and cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 29, Number 4 complete issue. First edition. The superior pubic ramus in Neandertals is elongated medial-laterally and thinned dorsal-ventrally compared to more recent humans. In the past, this morphology has been treated as a taxonomic marker distinguishing Neandertals from anatomically modern humans and recent humans and as evidence for a fundamental shift in reproductive pattern in the transition from Neandertals to modern humans. This study tests the hypothesis that interpopulation variation in the length of the pubic bone (among recent humans and between Neandertals and anatomically modern humans) is related to body proportions. Because maternal weight is an important factor in determining infant size, and because Neandertals were heavy, stocky, muscular individuals, they would have had large infants and as a result of selection during… Read More

(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 6047) 1st edition.Deutsche Schachzeitung was the first German chess magazine. Founded in 1846 by Ludwig Bledow under the title Schachzeitung der Berliner Schachgesellschaft, it took the name Deutsche Schachzeitung in 1872. (Another magazine used the title Deutsche Schachzeitung from 1846 to 1848.) When it ceased publication in December 1988 it was the oldest existing magazine in the world, having been published regularly since its founding in 1846 except for a five-year break (1945–1949) during World War II. Since January 1989, the Deutsche Schachzeitung was merged in the Deutsche-Schachblätter - Schach-Report which was edited in Hollfeld. The resulting magazine appeared with the names of both former magazines on its cover till December 1996. Since January 1997, this magazine again was merged in the Berlin magazine Schach. In 1929, as a result of his fieldwork, he was able to publish a grammar of the nearly extinct language of the Wappo people of the San Francisco Bay area. The Vinland Map, dated to about A.D. 1440—at least fifty years before Columbus landed in the Americas—is a unique map of the world that shows an outline of the northeast American coast and a legend describing its discovery in about 1000 by Leif Eiriksson, the Norseman from Greenland. The map was published by Yale University Press in 1965 and generated an enormous amount of debate. 395-412 pages with references cited. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. current Anthropology Volume 10, Number 4. First edition. The author argued that a number of recent writings based on primate studies and on analysis of early hominid evolution have blurred certain central issues regarding human and non-human primate behavior. The central problem of how man organizes his experience and how he interacts with his environment is seldom squarely faced. A framework is provided here which examines tool-making and language come out of the same cognitive structure. The framework attempts to provide means by which the appearance of emergent human behavior may be gauged from fossil record. Two attributes, arbitrary form and imposition, are defined. It is argued that these two dimensions are specific to the human psychological structure, and that stone tools made to any standardize for satisfy the requirements of emergence in cognitive structure. Tool-making is analyzed… Read More

Description:
52-73 pages with tables. Royal octavo (10" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's wrappers. American Anthropologist, Volume 96, number 1, March 1994 whole issue. First edition.Using logistic regression, this article tests the relative importance of the "imagined community" on the intentions of undocumented immigrants to stay in the United States. the argument is that, everything else being equal, imagining oneself as part of a local community is a powerful influence on settlement. If, for whatever reason, an undocumented immigrant comes to this self-perception, then he or she is likely to desire to stay in the community. The results clearly underscore the importance of feeling part of the community. Not only is the influence on the dependent variable statistically significant, but the odds ration indicates that those who feel part of the local community are almost four times (Mexicans) or almost five times (Central Americans) as likely to intend to stay permanently in the United States as those who… Read More
