Lima Leitão (1787-1856) was born in Lagos (Algarve), and served as a physician with the French and the Portuguese armies before moving to Brazil. In 1816 he was sent from Rio de Janeiro to Mozambique, where he was chief physician, and from there in 1819 to India, to act as Intendente de Agricultura.
